I got a question for you guys with stacks...

When you run dual stacks the pipe that goes to the driver side runs over the fuel tank. Did you guys have to make a heat shield ir something? I would think you would need a heat shield but I know alot of you guys have already done this. Thanks for all the help guys..

There is only 1 pipe that is underneath the bed, then either a box or a tee to each stack, no pipe runs over the fuel tank

I should have mentioned that I do not want the y pipe in the bed. I am trying to put it all underneath so that all that sticks up are the stacks.

Stacks

I just sent offsome serious green backs for some stacks are they gonna drive my neighbors up the wall(A guy can only hope)how loud are they is it like running open headers on my built prerunner ranger with 347 or like my (fartcan)nissan with headers i drive straight piped 550 yellow motor all day but the 5.9 isnt a 15.0 liter either so i would really like to **** my neighbors off
Thanks

moparnut, i was considering the same thing. there is an approx 4 inch gap between the bed and frame. i considered putting a piece of 4x6 tube with caps welded on the ends across the top of both frame rails. all you would need to do is run a 90* into the bottom of it, and then run the stacks straight through the bed and weld them to it. my reason was to have the stacks outside of the wheel wells so i could still haul 8ft lumber.

That is the same reason I wanted everything under the bed.

I think the box tube under the bed is the best idea...except for fuel tank proximity. If you went with a Ramcharger fuel tank, you'd be in business, but even with a heat shield, I wouldn't feel comfortable. When my pyro was post turbo, I saw 1000+ in the downpipe, so maybe 5-600 near the tank? No thanks

i ran a single on the pass side under the bed...4'' will hafta be flattened somewhat to make it fit. unless ya do a body lift. it gets hot but it wouldnt burn yer fuel tnak or set ya on fire. mine hasnt melted my rubber grommet around the hole in the bed. been a yr or so.

its loud as ...... but i like it. kinda ruff pullin the toyhauler though for 8 or 10 hrs..

Bullhauler, It may only be a 5.9L, but these 1st gens have the same bellar and throat as yer 550 when ya put straight pipe n stacks on. Make em 6" pipes and its even closer to it!!
If your neighbors dont like noise, or yer yellar motor on pipes, yeah you'll make em angry.

As far as running your pipes under the bed, what you really need to consider as well, is the fact that the 90* elbow isnt going to turn as sharp as u hope, you will have to cut an oblong hole in the bed to allow the elbows to finish their turn. And I agree, 600* by the PLASTIC fuel tank is not a good idea, if u really use all 8 feet of your bed, stacks are not for you.

HOWEVER, there is another option. Run the plumbing UNDER the frame, then make the turn up into the corners of the bed. I have seen this done, some guys may critize it, but its your truck, do it how u want. ALSO, there is one more thing u can do, but you need to remove the bed. Build one of those square tube boxes and set it on the frame under neither the bed.

Yea, NV, I know they will drive the neighbors up the wall. The farmer across the street said he could hear me go to work at 3 am. He is my bro's boss and is known to be a sound sleeper.

Trust me, they will look good on your truck

EDIT: The pipes, to the touch, are ok after a 50 mile drive. I can barely hold my hand on them for a couple of minutes before I take my hand away. Now let it sit 3-4 minutes and they are really cool.

My neighbors never complained when I would leave at 6am with a straight piped 6.2L diesel. That thing was incredibly loud I didn't think it would be that much louder without the mufflers but I was wrong. And because of the crappy IDI you had to start it at 1/2 throttle on cold mornings so it would really bark when it would start.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. One of our members (who will remain nameless unless he wants to chime in here) uses his bed like a trash can and has had a couple small fires on highway trips. I would want at least 4" air gap between the PLASTIC fuel tank and any part of the exhaust.

I would complain not because it was loud, but because you were driving a STRAIGHT PIPED 6.2L DIESEL!
