HY35 vs HX35??
Alright here is my question, I am trying to set my 93 up to go across country and have a really good deal on an hy35, I've been reading some people aren't happy with them but what do you guys think?
I am going to maybe add some small injectors later and tweek the pump some more. Should I be ok, I tow a 7x12 enclosed trailer that ways about 3500 pounds loaded. I relize this turbo spools up fast and that is what I like but I hear your egt's are higher too. At the same time I am adding 4" exhaust from the turbo back that should help out some. Any info is good info....

I think that a hy35 would be too small. My hx35 spools up almost instantly, my egt's are in check, and it sounds pretty good too. I've heard that a 12cm hx35 is one of the best mods you can make to a 1st gen 5-speed truck, and I would have to agree.

If you are looking to tow, I mean tow period. It doesn't matter if you tow regularly or only twice a year, do not run the HY. You will get hot. Go with the hybrid from PDR, or pick up a used HX35/12WG, or get rid of the 12 and pick up a 16 NWG. You will have better EGT's, and power in the high end.
Now, if you ever decide that towing will never happen, or your towing consists of a yearly trip to the dump, and your rig is mainly used for daily commuting, I would go with the HY, and these are my reasons:
1. Inexpensive. These can be had for next to nothing locally or through ebay. I wouldn't spend more than $100.00
2. Boost. I can hit 30 so fast, and the truck responds quickly. Off the line(stoplight) I guarantee no one will ever beat you. Passing on the freeway is effortless, and entrance to the freeway on ramps will amaze you.
3. if you take this truck off roading, you will get better results. I took my W250 elk hunting this last year, and when we came upon a large herd, the get up and go was nice, and paid off.
Now, with that said, here is additional advice:
1. If you come across a used one, go ahead and check the wiggle in and out and side to side on the compressor wheel shaft. Excessive is not good, as with any turbo. If the compressor housing(cold side of turbo) is very golden in color, the previous owner let it get way too hot. This was explained to my by Dynomite Diesel. Mine was when I got it, but everything else checked out OK, so I didn't mind.
2. The HY is great if your are running stock injectors, as I found out. Upgraded injectors, well, you won't have enough air to support them.
3. If you like turbo whistle, you will like the HY. My PDR hybrid doesn't even come close to the whistle that the HY puts out. And this was with the turbo whistle deadening cone still on!!
Conclusion: I feel that the HY doesn't get enough credit when installed on a 1st gen. If you want quick, inexpensive response and are not looking to upgrade right away with injectors, fuel, etc., then I would go with it. That was my scenario about 4 years ago. Once I upgraded the injectors, the HY would seem to choke off at high end driving. Hope all this helps in your decisions!

DTR Member "bigragu" is giving you some good advice. I agree with what he is saying and looking at your post and plans for your truck I would also highly recommend an HX-35 over any HY-35 Turbo. The HX-35's are pretty tough turbos and dependable when used within their parameters.
Good luck to you and welcome aboard.

My "experienced" results were with an auto, and I believe my sig shows "automatic", and all the advice given was based on the turbos used on both my automatic transmissions, which by the way are upgraded. My D250 has the BD line of upgraded TC's, while the W250 has been changed over to the DTT line, that is, the entire transmission.
