how tough of a job? turbo housing

Hello, How tough of a job is changing out the turbo housing? Any special tools needed? Any tips or pointers you can give me? I am still trying to decide how to go about adding a little more power to a stock 93 and am looking at all options. Thanks

are you swaping the entire turbo or just the exhaust housing??

if you are doing the exhaust housing spray the bolts with some pb blaster for 2 days.

remove turbo assembly. remove bolts and beat with a rubber sledge to your hearts content. eventually it will be gine to move. rotate every so often as to not bend the fins.

took me 20min of all i had to finally get it to even show movement.

It helps if you take off the compressor housing to get a better shot at the turbo housing. I had to use a ball peen hammer on mine. It didn't hurt the housing none but be sure you don't hit the compressor flange.

Oh yeah, you need to take out the 4 bolts holding the turbo housing on also in case you were wondering. The pb blaster would help here also I'm sure.

Just a clarification here: You're not trying to drive the housing off the turbo at first. Just lay the turbo down on a hard surface and beat on the turbine housing as hard as you can with a 2# mini-sledge. After a while the you will see that the housing has started to move from the shock and vibration. Then you can switch to a smaller hammer and gently tap the housing the rest of the way off.

It's actually kind of a fun job because you get to beat on something.

and *do not* do what I did and bang on the turbo while holding it, when it comes apart, the turbo may slip out of your hands and fall on the turbine blades which bend upon such force. that said, GL

When I did mine I had a problem with a couple of the bolts holding the turbine housing on wanting to round off. Because of their positioning a normal box wrench would not fit. I took an old cheapy and ground it down enough to fit over the bolt, it worked like a charm. If you cant get them loose with an open end try this.

If it`s REAL stubborn you can heat it GENTLY and then quench with some PB, repeat a couple of times and it should almost fall apart after a coupla good whacks. Just don`t light anything on fire, PB+ propane torch=BBQ somethingorother if`n ya aint carefull.

I'm also looking to upgrade to the 16cm. What kind of horse power should I expect from this? Gas mileage? More smoke?(hopefully)?
