How much r134?

I put an intercooled model condenser on my truck, early 91. How much r134 will it take?

I put 3 cans in, compressor stoped turning, belt was smoking, 134 was flying every where. So don't put in 3 cans.

The conversion from R12 to R134a is 80 - 85%. With three cans you really pushed over the top. Was or is the system empty when you started the recharge? Has the system been flushed from the older ester oil? Is the newer PAG oil been installed? Has there been an updated "H" valve installed.

Sorry due to the laws within Canada I have been doing retro fits since 1997(or maybe before that). Don't mean to be long winded.

i recommend ester oil over pag. i think it lubes better. got it in my 90 ctd been in it for about 6 years with no problems. most parts stores carry a flush kit with instructions. one must change receiver drier.

The ideal way to flush the old oil out is to replace the receiver/dryer, remove the compressor and drain. Then use a flushing chemical and machine to flush the lines and condenser and evaporator. I have heard of some people using brake cleans and flushing the system. A lot of brake cleans leaves a residue, if you want to see if your brake cleans leaves residue, is to spray some on a clean window. Let it dry. The residue will make the glass haze. You don't want to use a brake clean that leaves residue.

I know you already did the conversion but what about using freeze-12?
Instead of the conversion.
Have you ever used it rural?

I have never used any of the blends (Freeze 12) or any others. When you look at the MSDS they are usually a blend with butane, propane or any of the other flameable products.

The problem with blends is you have two or more different products that will leak out at different rates. So the dilema (sp) is what do you recharge the system to get it back to the original blend.

Some of the blends also come with a stop leak product inside the can or as a seperate can. This can degrade the system by blocking passages or worse case scenario causing the H valve to stick or seize. In vehicles with orfice (Chev/ Ford) it will block the orfice tube.

The blends are an ongoing debate, and have been since R12 has no longer been made. Lots of people are on different sides of the fence. There are enough nasty products that we use everyday in our vehicles, I don't see the need to add more to the mix.

Not trying to start a debate or a fight. Just stating what I feel.

Hope this Helps.
