The starter is probably groaning because of poor/low current flow (due to the worn contacts). Worn contacts are very common on these Nippondenso starters. I have a car at work (Toyota, same design starter...just LOTS smaller) thats an intermittent no-crank, I`m 99.99999% sure it`s worn contacts.

Keep fixin it.

Its like a stock car,ya fix whats broke and get back out there. Seriously, I look at a vehicle as buying mileage. cost plus repairs gets you X miles. I have found for the most part you make out better fixing what you have as opposed to major payments each month.

Thanks everyone. I will definitely look at getting the starter contacts. Buying the contacts sounds much nicer than buying a new starter.
