How much louder will the pickup sound after pulling the stock muffler?

You need to try it out and see for yourself. Just normal driving it ain't too bad. Pulling a load may be a different story. Where do you expect to exit the vehicle with the pipe? I've read that if it exits in front of the rear wheels it is a lot louder that behind the rear wheels and a little louder than stacks above the cab. Frankly, I didn't care for the noise so I installed an oversized muffler. It cost me about 25 to 50 degrees EGT.

I cut out the muffler and popped in some straight pipe, still exiting with stock tail pipe out back. with the windows up I cant tell any difference, even on the interstate. with the windows down it sounds great, you get to hear the turbo singing through the pipe.
I like it, windows are always down, esp. by any type of wall beside the road.
I put the new pipe in with those wide seal clamps, and cut out the muffler so if I need it I can do a quick swap.... and pass inspection.

Yeah, I basically wanted to know what the sound difference was between the having the stock exhaust with muffler and stock exhaust with no muffler (straight pipe). Sounds like there is a slight difference......

When you are passing someone, pulling a load, they will know the difference.
Mine was straight when I bought it. It is louder than others I have heard, but with the windows up I still barely hear it.

Muffler? What that?
I have never heard a 1st Gen with a muffler. The only other 2 I heard had them straight piped.
With my stacks, rolled up windows, at 65, is the quietest. It is like a low hum. I can hear the engine at this point. At WOT, the only thing that was louder was a turbo from a 02 Chevy DMax with a straight pipe.

Heck my truck came to me with no muffler and nothing behind where it went and it isn't bad in fact I sort of like hearing the turbo... idling at a stop in gear in my auto is a bit much so i'm going to straight pipe it back to at least in front of the rear wheels or perhaps a stack.

My Stans 4" with a muffler sounds the same at idle as the stock pipe hacked off at the transfer case with a 4" straight pipe that exited under the bed. I hated it straight piped while cruising on the highway. (annoying drone) With the 4" and muffler it sounds just right to me. Also, if hearing the turbo is your thing I couldn't hear mine as much straight piped as I do with the full exhaust.

I wonder why you have an annoying drone? Is the pipe hitting part of the frame somewhere?

I can relate to his problem. The 89 auto is the 727, no o/d. Which means high revs at highway speeds. I recently eliminated that problem
