How much boost is too much?

I was just wondering how much boost is too much for the stock turbo? I can hit 40 pounds unloaded and I'm not sure how well the stocker can hold that. I never thought the day would come when I would actually have to hook up my wastegate. Is a turbo upgrade in mu future? Any info would be appreciated.

Yeah, 40 psi out of an H1C is asking for trouble. Keep that up and you'll be picking bits of compressor wheel out of your hood insulation. What turbine housing are you running?

If you have a 12 cm housing with a wastegate actuator on it, you probably won't have enough boost for your fuel. You'll need a boost elbow or some similar "tuned leak" to get enough boost. Or ditch it and get a TurboMaster. It's infinitely adjustable with a 1/2 inch wrench.

I've been running the 12cm wastegated housing for about 3 years now and really like it. I've actually had to detune the truck slightly so i'm only making about 35 pounds now for fear of blowing up the turbo. I guess I'll be looking for a new turbo in the near future.

Just hook up the wastegate or get a TurboMaster, no need to ditch the turbo. 40 psi is more boost than you need, it's probably costing you power.

I've heard from a cummins engineer that 34lbs of boost out of the stock turbo is the maximum efficent boost level. anything after that was "hot boost" or something. I dont know. maybe that will help

Cody, that H1C is too small...hurry up and get that 40!!!

I wouldn't push more that 35psi out of the H1C.

I'm going to start gathering up some 35's, 40's, and such...we can build some monsters.

Jimmy- If you don't plan to run bigger injectors the stock turbo or a used HX-35 will do you fine. Just add the 16 cm housing to get rid of the lag and keep things cool. With big injectors a hybrid like the PDR-35 is a good idea.

The PDR-35 doesn't come with a turbine housing, and the 16 cm housing is a good match - you should still get one. You're like me - If I can see the car behind me I'm disappointed.

Yep any more than 30 PSI and you start overspeeding the turbo and causing heated air. I ran a stock H1C to 37 for quite a while and ended up lunching it.
I called High tech turbo in Salt lake and got a complete turbo for less that $700. they took a stock H1C and machined out the fresh air side to take an HX40 compressor wheel, and I got it with a 16 housing. I have seen 41 PSI in the winter and 36 PSI in the summer. I like it.
