Thanks so much,
Sounds like a heck of a workout if I ever get a flat. Can't put tire in bed. My industrial, double door topper will be bolted on the bed and it is always full hauling construction materials.
Boatnik, I'll look at your idea. Son-in-law has welding equip
Crossy's son, thanks for the GMC leads.
Jim Lane, thanks for all the pics - very informative. I now know what I'm missing on the truck. Instead of laying under the truck to hoist up the tire, how about this. Instead of a jam nut that you need to turn - what about uses the winch or cable idea to hoist that end? You could lay the tire in place (I gather the tire would be laying at an angle - resting on the spare tire holder) and then use a winch / cable on the jam nut end??
BILTIT, thanks for offer. I've been through your town in my multiple travels in Canada
ofcmarc, good idea
When the weather improves and I get to a yard - maybe I can find some parts
Cheers

ive got my bfg 35" spare to fit up there, ive had to use it twice in 150k miles, both those opportunities were limited workouts, with no floor jack, i used my knees laying on my back to get the leverage, with the camper on the back, it the only alternative, im happy to have the big tire stored underneath.

If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow and ice, under the bed is a bad place to put it.
My 91, the spare lives in the bed because of my class 5 hitch. One of these days I'll get around to making a mount.
My 92 has a hoist type under the bed. That is were I found out that is a bad place in the winter. So in the winter it also rides in the bed.

Thanks guys,
Once I get to a yard and get some parts, I'll post my solution.
I'd like to find the hangar that wnet with my 92 and use a winch on the end that I need to hoist. Might work
Cheers

This my be a little off topic. I'm working on my ram 2500 and don't have the handle crank to lower the spare tire. Can you use a socket on a very long ext to lower it?
