how do I get the turbo to spool sooner?

I was re-reading the sticky, its been a while and I don't remember what was the mod to help the turbo spool faster. I think it was something with AFC, but I tried opening the VE pump modifications and it doesn't exist anymore.

I have a 4spd right now and I think this is part of the problem, but how do I get the turbo to spool a little sooner? I don't have a boost gauge yet but I can't hear the turbo spool until late and the egt's get high by then and I also run out of fuel pressure. I ordered a piston lift pump to fix the last but what was the mod to help the turbo spool sooner and maybe lower My egt's.

Thank You.

Bump timing, mess with afc and tune it in yourself. Does it smoke a lot and then spool? or just not get going for a while? Also do you still have your stock turbo? If you do I would recommend upgrading it or at least getting a 12cm exhaust housing.

This is a low budget truck, I will do everything I can with what I have but I won't spend on a upgrade unless something need to be replaced. I can hear the turbo spooling at about half throttle or maybe a little bit more but then it is a little late bc the egt's are around 900f already and it just gets hotter at that point to almost 1200f but never actually get to 1200f bc I run out of fuel or fuel pressure (stock lift pump until I get the piston pump) I guess when I get the new lift pump it may be hotter and I will need the turbo to push some air to lower egt's.

Is this on the 4bt or your ford 6bt?

turn the starwheel down and smoke screw down a tad. Also rotating the fuel pin or buying an aftermarket will help

What's your air intake setup? Exhaust restrictions?

I can hit 1100f on a run empty at defueling with the mods in my sig. but yours should be lower with the 18.5 cm ex. housing you should have on your turbo now. Do you have stock inj.?

The best way to spool faster is to change out the exhaust/turbine housing for something smaller. Exekiel, I don't know what you've got right now, but an HX35 housing would help a bunch and shouldn't cost but $50-$75. And, it'll fit right on your stock turbine wheel.

Yes this is for the 4bt, i will turn the fuel pin maybe grind it a bit, it worked well with the 6bt.
This turbo housing, are there any specifics? the price isn't bad.

I will post pics of this engine, I changed all the tubing since there was steel tubing and it was all rusted inside the pipes, I used aluminum for the filter side and hydraulic hose for the intake side.

Thank You.

My truck used to be an automatic with the dreaded 21CM lagmaster...basically the biggest housing that came on these trucks. It would spool ok, albeit a little slow, with the auto, but with the stick, I'd lose all my boost in between shifts, and it'd be the middle of 4th before I'd see more than 10psi.

I posted a wanted ad here and on the cumminsforum and a day or two later someone contacted me...$50 for a 12CM housing with the wastegate welded shut.

Now, I can spool it up a little bit by revving it in neutral, and she gets to full boost so much faster under normal driving.

That might be something to consider...and there's also a possibility you could sell the 21CM housing on ebay or something. These days the smaller gasser 4cylinders are using Holset turbos and apparently the 21CM has a market there.

I'll get some pictures from the turbo. There are two things dragging it on the road one is the IP is not setup right for this Big vehicle and two the 4spd tranny has gaps the size of a bridge in between so the thing will move only thanks to the torque from the engine. A nv4500 might be in the future but this thing cost Me a lot so far so I'm trying to keep it to a bare minimum until I spend money on upgrades again, I could go crazy but My wife don't seem to understand the difference between the new piston pump and the one I'm trying to get rid of.

I'm not sure what kind of air filter setup you have on the 4BT, but does it have the stock paper air filter? I couldn't hear my turbo hardly at all until I "modified" the air box and stuck an AFE filter in there (stock size). Big difference!

4bt

ive got a couple of those, stock turbo is the h1c, usually with a ungated 12cm exhaust housing, the intake manifold is very small, i think less than 2", just remanufactured a steel intake with a 2-1/2" opening and big difference, still working on intercooling it, ive got the cooler, looking for the thinner radiator to get the room, im running the hx-35 on my jeep, getting 20psi. still a little laggy, ill update progress.
