Hot wired KSB

Is this an ok thing to do and how do you do it?

What do you gain by doing this? Should I try it?

KSB advances IP timing to make starting easier.

Some do wire a switch so they can advance it running down the 1/4.

Will actually hurt if you leave it wired hot.

On the inercooled trucks you add 12 volts to advance the timing. And on the n/ic trucks you unplug the ksb, take 12volts away to advance the timing

I just had a switch in the cab so that I could turn it on and off as I wanted. I would only turn it on for short periods of time. It made 39hp on the dyno.

Yep, definitely a good thing to have on a switch. I have a "magic wire" that I loan out to folks at dyno days. Goes from the shutdown solenoid to the KSB.

So throwing a switch in and giving it a flick on the sled won't be a bad idea then. Thanks alot. We have a local pull coming up in about 2 weeks, so hopefully I can do a little better than my previous 255.9 ft.. Thanks for the advice.

Why can't it have 12 volts to it continuously? What bad happens?

And on the non-ic is it OK to leave it unplugged? Does that cause any problems?

Makes the pump run hotter, it's best to not be in "KSB" mode continuously.

Is this true? As my 91 non I/C when the wire is hookedup it gets hot in the area of the KSB.

The non-IC trucks use a wax motor KSB that needs 12 volts to keep you out of KSB mode. A wax motor KSB solenoid uses electrical current to heat a wax pellet (like in a thermostat) that expands and moves the plunger, that is why it gets hot.

Is my KSB working? I checked and i have system voltage going to it, but unplugging it doesn't seem to do anything. I can't hear or feel a difference. I would think 35hp would be noticable and a difference could be heard at idle.

The wax motor style works slowly. Your needs to be left unplugged on the dyno.

ok, when i tried it last time the truck was running for a few minutes before i unplugged the KSB. I guess the wax was already warmed up, and takes a while to cool down. The truck is cooled down now, so i'll try to unplug it before i even start it.
