Holset Super 40

Was thinking of upgrading from my HTT 60mm to a Super 40 due to the internal wastegate, bigger turbine wheel, and improved compressor wheel, although it's still only 60mm. Who's running one? How do they like it? They say it's good for 450 at the wheels.

Super40 is supposed to be THE turbo to run. I'm planning on one for my top next year.

The Super 40 is a great turbo, but with your trucks main purpose being horsepower, I'd go for a 62/71/14 S300 instead.

It has the same compressor wheel as the he351 but the turbine is larger. A few He351 have dynoed 550rwhp on common rail trucks so I think the super 40 would be capable of making more since the exhaust should flow more. Or at least less drive pressure.

I can't remember seeing anyone running a 40 on a 1stgen (VE) make 450rwhp (#2 only). Now I don't have the best memory either, lol! Seems to me spending that much money on another turbo that is the same size is a little unproductive. Spend $1000 and get a good used 62. Are you thinking maybe the 62 would be too much with the supercharger?

It discusses pro's and con's...

Interesting reading - and remember - the Hoslet flow chart is in metric

I like the silver 62 from II I'm running. The 74mm exhaust wheel REALLY helps get the exhaust out at high RPM and while spraying it. Keeps drive pressures down.

I ran a plain jane 16cm gated HX40 for a couple weeks. It is laggier then my 62/71/14cm S300 by acouple hundred rpm. But if a person could pick one up at a cheap price it would be worth it IMO. But if your thinking of buying a new one, id just spend a couple extra $$'s on a nice S300.

I've got a basic 40, 60/65/16 and at 6000-8000 ft it'll start making 5lbs manifold at 1500rpms. And that is with smallish injectors.

Yes, mine was not a super 40. Its just a stocker off of an 8.3L. It had the same spec's as the one apwatson50 is running.

Supers have the extended tip design like the performance s300's. Is anyone on this board running an actual Super 40?

I ran one for a while, it was a PDR Super 40. I wasn't impressed with the spooling, so I put on an S300G. While it is a smaller turbo, it has instant boost and the truck feels every bit as powerful, and runs a little cooler. I would like to step up to a 62/65 as soon as funds permit. This is in my 1993 W350/518 with 90 horse injectors, a worked over pump, 3.73 gears and 235/85/16 mud tires. It is wastegated to 40 lbs.

I have a 6 blade HX40, 16cm T3 WG'd. It has a garret tag on the compressor cover. I got it used from the guy who bought it new. He said it was a super 40 from HTT.

I called HTT and they told me there are 6 and 7 blade super 40's.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the turbine wheel in a regular 40 and a super?

Just an FYI, "the necessary modifications so these turbos fit" is grinding some of one of the WG actuator nuts down. Otherwise the comp cover would hit the nut before the IC plumbing will line up. No big deal.

It is my impression that there is the HX40 six blade and the HX40 Super with seven blades. The seven blade has the extended tip design.
