history lesson on the truck tonight
Went down to the local wed. night car show at A&W and got there early enough to park with all the cars. Lots of gawkers and compliments on my stacks, it was pretty cool. I thought they were a little tall, but after all the attention it gets I'm gonna leave them, lol. Pics and stack install story in a thread coming soon. Anyhoo, this woman comes up and talks to me for a few and come to find out this was her old truck. When I bought it, speedo said 87k. She said she drove it for about 2-3 years with NO speedometer, and I'd wager to say at least50-75k with no speedo. She also said when she traded it in it had 93k with no working speedometer. Hmmm...so who knows how many miles my truck has...I bet the dealer put another instrument cluster in it. She also had the electrical gremlin I have, with the ABS, and wait to start light, and the voltmeter going nuts. Said the voltage regulator was replaced twice, AND had a new head gasket about 3 years ago. Sooo, the more I find out, the less I know about it. Oh well, runs great, used about a quart of oil in 3500 miles here recently, but it does blow blue smoke under no to light throttle. I imagine timing, but gotta take the pump off and rotate it a spline to get more timing out of it, it's already at its max when I tried to advance it and the factory match marks lined up perfectly. Anyhoo, I'm more confused now. I thought I had a spring chicken with only 100k on it...I bet it's closer to 200k. Well, that's my story for the evening, take it easy,

Could be worse i guess, ya could be walkin out of Tractor Supply, and notice a guy lookin at your truck, and ya say hows it goin and find out it was his truck, 7 yrs and 250k ago. i have heard rumors im pushin 500k but just chose not to belive them, speedo shows 179 so thats wut its go.

Yup, what timb said. There's 3 nuts that hold the pump to the timing case--loosen them (not fun) and one bolt on the lower rear portion. 4 in all. Push pull and pry so those timing marks separate by about 1/8'' and tighten everything back down. To advance, rotate the top of the pump toward the cylinder head. Yes, the pump shaft is keyed, so don't bother taking the pump off. There's enough room to advance it built right in to the mounting slots. If you're smokin blue, you're definitely behind the mark a fair bit. Good luck!

you guys (fear and silver) are making me happier that my truck came though family... i get to know the entire history! (not trying to brag i promise) fear while you have the head off take lots of pictures inside... love to see them if it really has close to 500 on it!

You can get to that back bolt with other tools but a 'S' tool works the fastest. Just get a cheap $ 5 special some where. I forget what size it is right now.

Ok, I already tried moving the pump, but the pump is already at the end of the slot holes. I took a 13mm wrench, cut it in half and welded it at a 90* angle. Got some pictures I have to put up here shortly. Anyway, point being, I have no room to advance the pump...it moved maybe a 1/32", and that was it...done, at the end of the slots, no where to go, etc...I used the strap wrench and dead blow tapping method, worked fine. I'll have to take some pics of the pump where it's at...that'll be tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far guys,

also take the afc line off the back of the pump and it moves a little more then put back on (dont forget the washers)
also I kept the same mileage BUT I also increased the fuel a bunch and the throttle is more reactive
