Help! I've got a faint squeel only when shutting down.

Not something I would worry about. Every so often I get a chirp on shut down. Somewhere I read it was normal for it to do it from time to time. Just make sure your belt isn't worn. It's easy to replace if need be.

The chirp was installed at the factory by the gods of unbelievable compression. If it ever runs out of squeak, you may have to rebuild the shortblock after about another 250k miles.
Seriously, as said before, its a cummins thing. The high compression stops the engine so fast once you shut off the fuel, the inertia in the pullies keeps them turning a frac sec longer than the crank.
Love the squeak, embrace the squeak, cherish the skueak. Its proof you don't have a dura-stroke or a power-max. Just a simple mechanical total compression engine named after a man not a sales pitch.
Just my unbiased opinion.

It's normal for a real diesel to squeak while shutting off.
My 96 does it.

Well my new to me D250 has squeaked since I got it. And just the other day I put a new goodyear tensioner on it along with my old gatorback belt from the other truck. Now no more squeak.
