Hello
Hello Thanks in advance for any help. I have a 1992 D250 diesel, 2w,158000mi.,automatic, dana 70,3.54, limited slip.Great truck until now. Had a intermittent clunk that got worse. Now it's making a chattering gravely noise and barely moving. Got it home and pulled the rear axles, checked the shoes. u-joints. They all look fine. With the rear axle off the ground I put in reverse, rear wheels turn, in NEUTRAL rear wheels turn, in drive rear wheels turn. Put a stethoscope to differential loud grinding noise, lesser noise at the tranny pan.
Trying to diagnose and only fix what's broke.

Sorry about posting irregularly, I'm a newbie.
Two piece drive shaft carrier bearing OK and u- joint tight and smooth rotating. Pulled the diff cover plate and found a few 1/8x1/4x1/32 chips (3) and a little fines. Can't see much yet but by rotating the L rear wheel the ring gear looks good. I'll have to pull the axles and the guts to learn more. I'm guessing the internals of the sure grip.
Thank You all again

You've experienced what happens when the clutches in the trac loc diff are not maintained. Faith warned me about this, and luckily I was able to replace the spiders / clutches before my diff did what yours did.
If more people listened for the "clunk" when putting it into "D" or "R", and investigated this noise, prior to the spiders blowing out, most of these rears would be saved.
