heavy/hills towing w/big injectors-pics
i like to see towing pics,so thought i would post. ve pump tows very well set up right. my injectors are 5x13 or 5x14, not sure wich, get them used. flow more than 5x12,s and pods. trailer wt is 6000lbs, truck is 11000lbs. ive towed more but not often. most of my towing is in mountains, 4800 ft to about 8000. towed as hi as 10,000 ft. this trip was pretty flat. in 5th on a slight grade passing a car egts got about to 1200. i rotate my fuel pin(cone) to shallower side when towing heavy. dynoed at 331 with this setting. on acceleration egts arent a problem. he-351 tows well. i used to ron pods and an hx. worked well too. these stixs run a little hotter than pods. i usually only tow 6000 to 8000 lbs. a load this size is no problem on the flat but in the hills i drop to 4th, keep rpms up its ok. if i worked it in hills this heavy all the time i would go smaller on injectors. 06 intercooler helps alot too. i think afc tuning helps alot when towing with big stixs. or a valet switch.

crewcabxlt your ride is sharp. I like the 3 axle gooseneck, I miss mine with the smooth ride of the 3 axles. The 3rd axle sure takes alot of the jar outta the ride on rough roads. Fantastic looking set up and good job on the thread of keeping us informed on what's working good on pulling.

thanks, the gooseneck is nice , 30ft, 3 axle really pulls smooth. my dad actually owns it. one of the benefits of working for him on the farm. 1bad93- i used to run an hx-35 and pods w/ a ground fuel pin. i would rotate my pin to shallow side for towing heavy. i made several trips to salt lake area with this set-up to haul home wrecked or broken trucks home. pulling a heavy bumper pull w/truck on wieght of around 8000 to 9000 lbs. 200 mile round trip. about 8 miles of 5-6% grade to climb each way , 4600-6200 ft elevation. on the freeway at 70 -75 flat cruising egts around 700*. uphill on the climb in direct,(4th) at 60-65 egts ran around 1000,boost around 30 psi. uphill in 5th pushing 65-70 egts climb to 1200 and i have to be light on the throttle.to my surprise i consistanly got 18-19 mpg on these trips. now w/he-351 , bigger stixs and a slightly ground afc foot i do about the same, need more time to tell. i have more power too. i think the he-351 matched with pods or a smaller injector would tow really well. PLEASE NOTE: this is my experience with my set-up, i have done alot of small details to help cool egts. AND i am a guage watcher. please dont melt any parts on your own truck. the afc tuning seemed to really help control egts.

i tested both wastgated and bolted shut. when set to open at 25 psi egt,s would skyrocket when pushing it. it seemed to cool best 32-35 psi. when towing i set my fuel to give me max boost around in that range. psi w/ gate bolted shut. egts stay safe that way. wastegate at 38 for play with lots of fuel. the he-351 likes higher boost.

yes don, 3:54 gears. jimbo- injectors were custom built for moonlight diesel 1st gen sled puller, before he went to newer pumps. i think they are simular to ddp-4. they may be 5x.0014,s wish i knew for sure. they run clean and flow alot full throttle. i liked pods too, they run cleaner in the non i/c motor due to different piston bowl shape.

the he351 is a great turbo! I love mine! It definately likes higher boost! I could hit 40 lbs with my stock i/c sticks when i had the wastegate turnbuckled shut with an L-shaped bracket i made to hook the turnbuckle to. Then i took the J-hook off my old hy35 and put it on the same L shaped bracket that i had the turnbuckle hooked on and now with the spring on there, I got the wastegate openin at about 35 lbs of boost, so its opening from drive pressure. I did this cuz i wanna save my head gasket til i have more money to do some head work. But thats a way to use your wastegate on the he351 without using the actuator cuz you have to reclock the housings when you put it on a 1st gen and the wastegate won't match up.

what size are pods? 4x.014's? would those be better than 370's for me? i'm hearing so many different reviews about either of the 2. i'd like to hear from someone with experience with the same motor. of course, i'm running stock, but would still like to know.
