Probably toasted the switch, lets hope it didn't burn the plug/wires too bad. I think they used the same switch for years. It is the same on my 89 gasser, 92 diesel, and 95 diesel. Parts store has them for about $30. I felt stupid when I bought one, then came home and found three in my parts mess.

Might be a very good time to put your headlights on relays. That will help the life span of the new switch.

Relays will help a lot. My switch doesn't get hot anymore, and the lights are much brighter.
