Haze at idle on stock motor?

The other thing I wan to try is more timing. I have to be careful as I tow long distances (although not "heavy" by our standards) about 18,000 lbs (gross) at most. I have seen piston cracking problems with too much timing. Dave, as most people use the "I have my timing 1/2" fom the head" method, I just cannot do that. It amounts to "advance the distributor till it knocks, and back it off a little". Will it work, I suppose, but you never have a point of reference after that. Can you shed any wisdom on how many Thousandths, or MM past straight up you would suggest?
The 1/8" bump (match marks separated by 1/8") is safe and proven.

If you make a set of match marks before you move anything you can always go back. If you want to do it the scientific way, you can get the timing indicator setup for around $60 from a couple of the online VW diesel parts vendors.

Thank you for the advice!

O.k. Fuel pressure guage is in. Autometer electric 270 degree 15 psi. 8-9 psi at idle in gear @750 rpm. drops to 6 at WOT. NO less. 8 psi at cruise on fwy. This is post filter off of the Banjo bolt (I made my own fitting) I was actually quite surprised at the readings, so I hooked up my big ol Snap On Mechanical Guage. exactly the same, even fluctuates the same. So, I dont think I have a fuel delivery problem. At least TO the Injection pump. I may put a Capacitor in the guage line as it does bounce around a bit. Oh well, at least I know.
