Grey vs. Black valve cover gaskets

Manual says NOT to use the Grey valve cover gaskets, only the black ones.

I ordered a set from cummins and they are grey.

Whats the difference?

I thought this was from the service manual because the pictures are taken from there....But the text may not be.

#11 is where it says not to use the grey ones.

I use the Blue Fel-Pro ones and have had them on now for 3 years and no leaks in hot i.e240 water temp ops, and cold here in Alaska -35. They work very good.

Have had a set of the gray Cummins ones on my truck for 6 years or more without a hint of seepage.

The manual was also written 20 years ago.

Imo rtv or any sealant, plugs piston cooling nozzles and really cause accelerated bearing wear.

Depends on how liberal you are with the RTV and where you apply it as to whether it needs to be there or accidently got put there. Orange or black rtv is all i ever use and never have a problem. Tore a gasket one night at a pull and all we had was an old tube that was half hard and had to cut the top off to get enough out to do the job so i said to myself ... "Self" (thats how i address me when conversing and no one else is around) I hope it works and ran many a mile after that with no leaks
