getting shifter out of getrag
i have read all the threads i could find relating to this and i am stumped:
how do i get the shifter out of the trans? i have the top cover off the trans. i see the two pins to each side of the shifter tower. i do not see a snap ring.
how do i take the two pins out; they rotate in their bores, but wont pull out or turn out. i could not push the shifter into the tower any more. any advice for me?

That's a weird shifter also, mine sticks out of the cover 4" and then two bolts can be unscrewed to take the top half off. Yours looks like the New Process style, try pushing down in the thin metal cover, that is covering the shifter ball, with a large channel lock pliers. Then turn it (IIRC) counter clockwise. It is a b**ch to push in and turn at the same time.

I'm thinking this is not a getrag.....
the 93, 92, and 1 getrags we have here all have the snap ring holding the shifter down, the snap ring goes down into a little recession.
NV4500 ???

no i think its a gasser getrag top cover, its definetly not a 4500, everything else is the same but the shifter, i curious to know if it has a grove for a snap ring down in the hole but someone put a different shifter in it.

It's not an NV4500 or it would already be apart. You can push and turn the NVs without too much trouble. The pins on the sides just center the collar which comes out when the snap ring comes out. You should be able to push the collar straight down. It wont push down that easy but it should move. Putting it back in is however another story.

That is a Rag cover but it looks like the shifter comes out like about every 4spd on the planet, Push the shifter down and turn the piece of metal on top of the shifter ball counter clockwise about 45* and I betch the shifter pops right out

i thought the shifter and neck looked different from every other one i've seen. it is a getrag, i can assure you, i was driving the truck around with it in it the other day.
the two pins appear as though they go through the aluminum "neck" and then into "slots" in the ball of the shifter handle. they are either two seperate pins, or one that has broken in two, because if i turn one, the other does not move.
so general consensus is that the shifter handle should sit down in the "neck" lower when it is correctly assembeled with the snap ring? the shifter would move around alot when either in neutral, or in gear driving; it could rotate quite a bit.

In checking my 1993 Tech. Manual you are right EClancy. The manual clearly shows that the pins center the collar and do not go all the way through. It also shows that it is not a twist and turn setup. It suggests that after removing the snap ring, if the shifter does not come out easily that you push the collar down and release it quickly. If after several attempts that does not work you should tap the side of the tower lightly with a nylon or rubber hammer.
Remember that the G360 is German made. The G56 manual trans used in later Dodge Cummins powered is made with the bell housing is an integral part of the trans and has to be removed from the inside of the trans. Think outside of the box when dealing with these trans.

I am betting the snap-ring just fell out or wasn't put back in or something. They can be a PITA to get the handle out. There always seems to be a ridge above the snap-ring groove, even if you just had it out last week. You just got to push it down, then yank up. Repeat until it comes out.

ok gang, here's what i have found.......
i got the shifter out. the top collar-thing needed to be turned a bit, and it came out, along with the spring. no snap ring. here's the kicker: it appears that a previous owner has welded a different "neck" to the top of the original one. if i look down into the neck, i can see a snap ring down by where the shifter engages the tangs on the shift rails. i can also see two holes for the dowel pins which are supposed to hold the shifter (these are in addition to the two that were actually holding the shifter in the neck). above the lower dowel pin holes i can see another groove for a snap ring; i'm guessing that is what would originally hold the shifter in the tower. then on top of all this welded another section of a neck, where my shifter attaches. i dont know how i end up with this kind of garbage.
the shifter itself is a welded together mess of peices. there appears to be three different peices welded together. i got all the rails and forks moving again. the internals seem to be fine, just the shifter and neck are cobbeled together.
couple questions:
-are there supposed to be springs and ***** on either end of the shift rails, or both?
-what are my chances of finding the correct shifter somewhere? or even a top cover w/the correct neck and shifter, but no rails/forks, as mine seem ok?
i dont see why i couldnt cut the "extra neck" off in my bandsaw and install the correct shifter........
i really cant even believe what a mess this thing is...
