Getrag Tranny Question

I checked my tranny fluid the other day and it was low. I realized it was an odd fluid since it was not the customary red fluid I have seen in my other vehicles. After a few calls to the local parts houses, I found out I should buy the fluid from the local Dodge dealer. I went by with my VIN, and they told me the correct fluid, (75w-80 Synthetic). I asked out of curiousity the exact transmission in my truck. All they could tell was it was a "HD" transmission, and told me the only "HD" trannys were the NV4500's for the 91 thru 93, so that is what it had to have. I then noticed on the drivers side of the tranny the word "getrag". Can someone explain what this transmission is, or is it the same as the 4500? I am obviously wondering if they gave me the correct fluid. Sorry for the dumb question, just not real familiar with the tranny.
Thanks!

It is not a nv4500. It is a Getrag 360. Lube is 5w30 synthetic engine oil. Factory fill is 3.5 quarts. You should overfill by 1 quart. Overfill by way of the top PTO cover bolt or by filling through the shifter hole with shifter lever removed.

Thanks for the info. I take it that model is the least desirable of the two correct?

The Getrag 360 (Getrag is the manufactuer) is the manual transmission that was offered in the 89-93 model year Cummins Powered trucks. The NV4500 is the 5spd manual transmission that was offered in the 1994 to 2002 (not sure if it was 01 or 02) model years. Whether or not it is least desirable is up for debate.

As BGilbert said above 5W30 Synthetic Motor Oil is the correct lube. I changed mine and overfilled by a quart a year ago, and it made a big difference ( quieter operation, easier shifting, etc.)

You can also use plain old 5W30 oil; it is just not as good as fully synthetic.

I use 5 full quarts.

It sounds to me like the dealership you questioned needs to go to Dodge truck school.
