Getrag Speedometer Question
When I recently had my Getrag rebuilt, they installed a new speedometer gear.
When I got the truck all back together, the speedometer doesn't work.
I chucked the shank of the cable in a drill and the speedometer in the dash works.
By the way, to test a speedometer, run the drill in reverse.
Can I access the speedometer gear without removing the transmission from the truck??
Will grease/oil need to be drained??
There is what looks like a forked retainer that straddles where the speedometer outlet is on the transmission.
There are notches all around this that the forked retainer engages.
What could be causing the speedometer to not function??

Did they replace the right angle reducing gear or connect the cable directly to the tranny? The Getrag runs the speedometer the wrong way which you can see if you watch the odometer running backwards. The right angle reducing gear reverses the direction of the cable and also reduces the speed so the speedo reads correctly.

The pin in the right-angle adapter was broken; so, I screwed the cable in the transmission, minus the adapter.
So, do I understand correctly; the speedometer drive rotates the wrong direction; and, the right-angle adapter reverses the rotation to the correct direction??
By the way, when I chucked the drive pin of the cable in a drill, to operate speedometer, run drill in reverse.

I will watch as I go to a job tomorrow to see if it is unwinding.
I guess I should crawl under there and un-hook the cable, until I get the pin fixed in the adapter.
It probably is not good for the speedometer.

Edwin, I owe you a big cigar, or, if you don't smoke, maybe a steak, or both.
I was just about to pull out the gear in the transmission, until I read your reply.
I was in my jammies, about to go to bed.
I disected my adapter gizmo to see what I could do about making a new pin.
A 3/16 Allen wrench fit the hex-socket like it was made for it.
I cut off an appropriate length, chucked it in the drill press, and filed a groove to accommodate the tiny snap-ring that holds the pin.
I filed it square where it goes in the drive-gear in the transmission.
I re-assembled everything and gave it a shot of Kendall Super Blue.
I knew I couldn't sleep until I crawled under the truck and screwed this gizmo on.
I fired her up and went for a little test-run.
She works!!!
Slick as a ribbon.
I haven't been this excited since I found that big wad of bills that had no claimer.
Thanks for enlightening me and saving me untold head-aches, let alone heart-aches.

Glad you were able to get yours fixed. No need to worry about cigars or steaks but if you're ever over this way give me a shout and we can go have a cup of coffee.
Whereabouts you live in KY? My mother was born in Mountain Ash.
Regards
Edwin
