getrag fluid question.

So I'm about to drop the fluid in my getrag, and being the way that I am I decided to research a little. While the popular choice is 5w-30 synthetic, or synthetic/blend, and is what I'm also going to do, I thought I'd see what you guys thought about this.

Also, everybody seems to have different opinions about how much overfill to do. I'm planning on pulling the shifter and throwing 4 1/2-5 quarts in there. I'm really against overfilling, but everybody seems to agree that it's needed. Sound good? Thanks guys

I remove the PTO top bolt and fill it in from there. I have a hand pump I picked up at the auto store for $5 that helps fill it up.

I'm not sure if it reaches the 5th gear or not though. Anyone confirm this?

I installed a finned aluminum trans cooler [adds a 1/2 QT per cooler, but I only used one] in place of the PTO cover.
I then added 5 1/2 QTs and used the top PTO cover bolt to fill.
I got my trans coolers from Geno's, they come with a 1/8 NPT port for a temp sensor, new bolts and gaskets.
The kit comes with two coolers, one for each PTO cover.
I plan on installing the other cooler on my other '85 crew cab when I swap it over to 5 speed.
I used Royal Purple 5W-30 on my last Getrag fill up.

we run a fleet of dodges and have several getrag's some with near or over 1,000,000 miles on them loaded heavy. as the link says 5w-30 is to light. and gear lube to heavy. we tested several types of oils using temp probes in the getrag in all seasons. the best was a 50-50 blend of 5w-30 synthetic syncromesh transmission fluid and sae50 synthetic syncromesh transmission fluid. use 5 quarts of it. the sae50 is what is used in the roadranger big rig transmissions we stock dello for ours but every one has it and it already has the friction modifiers in it. over the years we have used several different 5w-30's it sometimes labeled some other way, royal purple is labeled syncromax. the amsoil used to be labeled 5w-30 but this last summer the napa store closed down and i needed some of what i normally use that day so i went to get the amsoil and the 5w-30 was no longer on the label, i think it just had syncromesh transmission fluid on it. we use a dispenser to get the 5 quarts in but most drive the truck in a bar ditch and pour it in.

That thread was an interesting read.
Anyone else running thicker oil than 5W-30 in their Getrags?
Considering those comments on that thread where posted in '04, it sounds like people have been doing this for many years.
Makes me want to install a temp sensor in my 'Rag

That's why I thought i'd ask. He's kinda alone on the subject, but he doesn't sound like just another idiot talking out his you know what. And I have plenty of 15-40 rotella on hand. Thought somebody might have some input.
My interior is all apart right now anyway is why I mentioned filling through the shifter, I was more curious about the fluid amount.
