Rebuilding the Getrag is way cheaper. I had mine done for me and it was only $900 for the rebuild and R&R - and they threw my SB clutch on while they were in there.

I think if you build another it will hold up pretty well. Are you the original owner or is this truck new to you? Were you using synthetic 5W-30?
The NV 5600 and 4500 are definitely stronger transmissions, but you can afford to rebuild a Getrag several times for what the conversion costs. If you don't plan on keeping it another 10 years, rebuild the Getrag.

Well, the first Getrag lasted you 13 years. If it turns out to be rebuildable, keep it, you'll probably get another 13 years out of it. If it's trashed beyond repair I'd seriously consider putting in another one - assuming you can do it for about half the cost of a conversion.
Mine is holding fine so far. I had it gone through in the spring due to worn 3rd gear synchros and I wanted to upgrade the clutch so it had to come out anyway. Nothing was broke. I don't tow, but I'm making half decent power. However, the hammer only goes down in 3rd gear and up, and only when my foot is off the clutch.

I didnt use any kits, I realy like the 5600 but its not a cheap swap.
I posted I believe it was 7-30-03, there were lots of details in that forum, and pictures. the 4500 has quite a big spread between 2nd and 3rd.
the 4500 and 5600 in a first gen will definetly require new engine adapter and starter for 94 up Dodge Cummins. you will need the newer clutch slave cylinder. the shifter hole on both 4500 and 5600 is about 6" back from the getrag.
in 2WD vehicles with 5600, there is no speedo drive on the trans, so you have to run the speedo with a special electronic box that drives off the abs gear in the differential.
Do you want to hear more
I will check back later

It is very common for the front countershaft bearing to shell out in the getrag. Is the case broken? Countershaft is approximately $260 and there are a lot of other parts available from standard transmission. The NV 4500, just like any transmission, has advantages and disadvantages. You have to consider what your willing to have invested in your truck too.

If you go the Getrag route, make sure you overfill to COMPENSATE for the added capacity. I put a full 5 qts of Synthetic oil in mine, with no added capacity. The minimum for this trans is 4.5 qts, that being stock. Whatever your filter/cooler adds, then add that to the 4.5 qts.
The 3.5 thats in the book...forget it. Start at 4.5 and work your way up.
I agree with Dave, its lasted 13 years, why wont it last a few more? I am confident with mine, and I tow some heavy weights, in the summer-almost daily I am up over 15,000-18,000 lbs. Just dont bog her down, and start out in 1st...etc etc etc.
