Question getrag 360 oil

I have heard that to quiet a 360, i should overfill it by one quart, with 40 wt. syn. Does this sound like good advise, or is someone blowing smoke. I'm on limited income and can't afford to brake something not broken already.

me too.put a street L in the filler neck hole to help you do this and I think it will take an extra 3 pints ,I just to to a feea that took the shifter out and put in extra fluid that tot.6 qts I told him to get back to me if he had any adverese effects. some people use 15-40 Rot. T some use 15-40 amsoil, some red line some even use a cooler on them like from quad 4x4 in Mont. for ztra cap. and cooler temps.

Overfilling by a quart is good, that helps keep the input shaft bearing lubed. I fill mine to 5 quarts. I also have an elbow in the fill hole, and I go to a parking lot that's on the side of a hill to top it off.

Do run a good synthetic oil like Mobil 1, or my favorite - Redline MTL. Transmissions put a lot of shear stress on oil, and dino oils and the "sorta-synthetics" like Castrol can't stand up to it for long. The shearing action reduces the viscosity even further, which can lead to burned gears and galled bearings.

Do not run a thick oil in the Getrag. Unlike most transmissions which have bearing clearance, the Getrag is set up with bearing preload. A thick oil may quiet gear noise short term, but will shorten the life of the bearings.

I recommend Mobil 1 5W30 or Redline MTL. The MTL is friction modified to help the synchros grab for faster/smoother shifts.

I'm not sure that a Getrag can be made totally quiet. Most will always have some gear rattle below 1200 RPM. If all you have is gear rattle (low RPM in every gear, not load dependent) your noise is normal.

Thanks guys, my trans is on the floor right now waiting for a bearing kit to get here. The input bearing and the two on the counter shaft felt good till you put a load on them, then felt gritty. I thought the 4th and 5th gear noise was getting out of hand, so we took her apart. I'll put the extra oil in through the shift tower before we put it back up. I love this truck, but nothing from a parts manual seems to fit. It's as if it was put together from a lot of differant years. Now if I could get the speedo and grids to work again!!!
