Just to make something clear, is better to overfill and the quantity is 5qt right?
I think the elbow with clear plastic is a great idea, some say this trannys leak some so it is good to have a visual reading of how much really is in there right?

Also, what fluid to use 80-90w, sincromax, lucas anti slip and most important Where do I get it?

Thank You.

Yes, various ways they leak are often traceable as root causes to the failures they suffer. Whatever you do DO NOT put gear oil in it! A fresh fill of synchromesh or 5w-30 sythetic motor oil is all it needs. Synchromesh is best.

If putting an elbow & extension tube on the fill hole, is there a good tube length to use above the elbow to have 1 additional quart be at the top of it?

Also, where does everyone's clutch engage? Mine is right at the top end, so you have to let it out a long way before engagement.

Hope this wasn't too much of a hijack , but it seemed like this was a general Getrag thread.
An overfill won't help with your issues. Some of 'em shift pretty nice, others (like mine) are really slow from 2nd to 3rd. Winding it up high in 2nd seems to help some.

No, 4.5 quarts is the correct amount.
Factory fill was 3.5 qt.

Summit Racing sells it. My trans is still a little balky when cold, but it is way better than it was with 5W-30 Mobil 1.

Also, I've noticed a "clink" of slack in the driveline when shifting. Not sure if it's a u-joint, diff or in the gearbox. I'll have a closer look this weekend when I do the fluid change.
What diff fluid is good for these old beast?
OK, Did the fluid change. Overfilled it 1qt with 5w-30 synthetic and its much quieter now. Gear changes feel a bit more positive.

Slack in the drivetrain turns out to be a combination of the center driveshaft spline joint and two U-joints. Just a very small amout in each adds up.
I replaced the front joint last yr. The rear two have no zerk nor does the spline joint. I may add a grease fitting to the spline when I do the
u-joints.

Novice questions here, but what's the best way to get the oil into the trans...especially if I build the overfill tube arrangement in the sticky? What does everyone use, as the space to get a quart bottle at the right angle to fill is tight? Does everyone just use thier 1/2" drive ratchet to loosen these, or do you have a square drive that fits in the bung? I couldn't find any square drive stuff at Sears' website. Also, should I be putting any kind of teflon tape or thread dope on the plug & fill bungs? I may not build the sight tube right away, but I bet I could overfill the trans by doing it on an incline (with the front wheels safely chocked!) Can anyone give me a little advice here? Thanks in advance.

I used a small drill pump and some clear tubing. Poured the proper amount in a large container and pumped it from there into the fill hole, then finished off thru one of the top PTO cover bolt holes.

I think I paid $7 for it at Lowes.

Just curious to see what you all do, a couple of years ago I had a 93 gasser with the NV4500 and it really liked to start in 2nd. The truck I have now has the Getrag and it hates to start in second. It lugs and shakes and bucks. I start in first now but I don't think that will last too long it doesent seem to like that too much either. Could all this be caused by a clutch issue? The guy I bought it from said it has a "towing clutch" in it, and has no springs. This sound familiar to anyone?

So you should be able to start smoothly in second assuming there is no load correct?
