gear vendors vs 3.54s

How well do these things tow with the faster gears in the automatics? Dad's worried about towing ability with the faster gears. So I had the bright idea that if towing is diminished maybe I could run a trans-mounted and a divorce-mount gear vendors units if that's a problem. But I don't see towing more than about 5,000 pounds so I don't think the faster rears would be a problem. Any ideas?

Also, for now, would it be worthwhile to swap the 2500 spring for a 3200 spring without changing anything else on the fueling? Or would it be a dog over 2500? I'm just looking for another few MPH til I can afford some real upgrades.

You can't go wrong putting in the 3200 RPM spring.

Are we talking about a truck that has 4.10's?

It is a DOG with the 2500 spring. You would be surprise when you put in the 366 spring. It awakens your truck from that Coma that its in.

Not if you leave the power screw where it is from the factory

AS far as I know, it's dead stock, slow gears, top speed of 65 with 235/85R16s.

Sounds like 4.10s, but check your throttle rod to make sure it hasnt developed any slack over time.

I have towed 20K behind the truck with 3.54s, so higher gears wont hurt at 5000#. Actually, higher gears may help you, as you are more likely to be in the sweet spot in the RPM range, reducing RPMs and fuel consumption.

That was my thought on the towing. I think it's got a cable, but I'll look at it. Just found out my trans cooler is one piece with the AC condenser and they are both leaking. Hope it's still available. Or that the inspection shop at least doesn't destroy it taking it out to stick a trans cooler in it.

scott pa I have a 92 with 4:10s automatic and a GV OD unit. In a trailer pulling situation you really don't notice the GV OD unit unless your pulling a heavy load 12/15k or more. My GV unit OD is about equal to the factory OD in the trans. which give me alot more road speed. With a 5k load and 4:10s I don't think you would even know the GV unit is even there or even notice the small loss in pulling power. With the 3:54s "I think" with the GV OD you would have a definate loss of power until you got up to road speed then kick in the GV and go on "maybe not so much with a 5k load" though. 3:54s and a GV unit with no load and an automatic "I think" would be the ultimate fuel saver. Just for an idea-your getting 20 mpg and fuel is $3.00 it is costing you .15 a mile in fuel cost. If you use $3500.00 for a GV unit "not sure of the cost but for example only" and you gain 3 mpg you would save .02 a mile which to cover the $3500.00 you would have to drive 175,000 miles to pay for it with fuel savings only, "check my math it's early after a long late night". Towing light 5k and a 3200 spring and a little fuel it probably wouldn't make any difference what gear ratio you had it should pull it easy "unless your pulling a big square front travel trailer "a parachute" over big hills or mountains. Good luck with which ever way you do it.

I'm thinking a manual of some sort would be the first thing to buy. Then I'll stick the spring in it.

This will be my road trip truck, being 2 wheel drive, once I can afford to fix it up good, so I want it to be able to step out and stroll without having it redlined. It hasn't been drove enough since we got it to see what it is actually getting for mileage.
