Gauge readings for stock truck

Gauge readings for stock truck
HI,
I just got my pyro and boost gauges installed in my truck and was wondering what the readings should be. It is a stock 92 W250 4X4 with auto tranny. I have a 4000 lb camper on the truck. Going up a hill about a quarter mile long I see max readings of 1050 degrees and boost of 12-13 psi. The pyro is pre turbo. Would these be normal readings for a stock truck with no engine mods?

Re:Gauge readings for stock truck
Considering you have the 21.5cm housing (same one I started with), you readings look pretty similiar. Your temp is a little higher than mine was but my injectors were in such bad shape it is not surprising. I would say they look good!
Just to give you an idea of where this can take you (i.e. open up the wallet), I am now showing 1050 pre-turbo and 29# boost. You can see in my signature what has gotten it there. Lots of guys on here are WAY beyond where I am at.

Re:Gauge readings for stock truck
GD, I WISH I had you temps, but the boost seems a little low, my .02 worth. Are these at WOT, or just going up the hill? My 92 would build 16-17 psi boost the day I bought it, but that was at wot. KEEP asking questions and listen to advise, I have and did, and now my wife is about to put the clamps on the check book :'( :'(. But I can build 30 psi boost, and I saw 1350-1400* on the pyro the other day
, but I need to figure out how I can slip a new complete 16cm turbo past the "bean counter". She saw me working on the truck, asked the guy on the fork truck "I thought this one was broke", " No mam, it runs just FINE". I'm not going to say what she said,(screamed at me) and IT DID NOT TAKE THE PA SYSTEM to get my attention :-X. I wondering if I can make HX-35 look like something else on the fork truck, I KNOW I can't turbo charge a 30x96 lathe

Thanks for the replies.
PumpDaddy, Yes this was at WOT. I have a K&N air filter but have not cleaned it in a while. Maybe that is keeping the turbo boost a little low. I know what you mean about the wife and spending money on the truck. A transmission gauge goes in this weekend and then I can get a baseline on what's going on in a stock setup. Then I will start with the tweeking of the engine. Probably start with the exhaust and some pump tuning. I'm already trying to think of excuses to get a new transmission. Hopefully the wife will buy into it.

GD,
I am hitting 17lbs of boost on the flats at WOT, empty. My EGT's post turbo rarely get over 700...but I have never had a real load on either...and being in the prairies rarely hit what could be classified a "hill".

When mine was stock it was around 14 psi boost and near 950°F pre turbo. Yes I have the smaller housing than the 92, but some more numbers for comparison.
Now run around 27-28 psi and still only around 1150°F max. Need more fuel![Wink](https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Re:Gauge readings for stock truck
Im not too sure what I was pushin stock, but what does it matter?? Now that you have the gauges to monitor the essentials, get that fuel flowing!! With my non-intercooled :'( '89 i can hit about 38 pounds (dont know exacty, gauge only goes to 35) and she gets between 1350 and 1400*. Let that thing rip, you wont regret it!!

That's the plan. I installed the Mag-hytec transmission pan this weekend and got the temp sensor wired up. That pan has a lot of metal and it seems to sink heat away from the temp sensor until the whole pan heats up. I drove over 10 miles in the city with a 4000 lb camper before the gauge started showing anything. Anyway I'll probably make a few camping trips to the desert this winter and get a idea of what the stock readings should be. Then I'll probably start with the exhaust system before doing anything to the fuel pump.

Re:Gauge readings for stock truck
Get the 16cm housing and Old Smokeys diaphram pin and turn the fuel up just a little and time that sucker at 1.5 to 1.7mm and the difference will be like jumping out of a V6 truck into a V10 truck. I'm NOT KIDDING! The difference is that dramatic. Boy, are you ever in for a power head trip after that! Ha Ha. Your exhaust should still be below 1200.

Hey Blowndodge,
I see under your name it says southern cal. Was wondering where you are from. I am in Mission Viejo. You know of any good cummins mechanics in southern cal.

Re:Gauge readings for stock truck
I live in the Lakewood Long Beach area. I haven't looked for a good Cummins wrench because I won't let anyone work on my truck but me! The dealers here have the same reputation elsewhere. I have 2 retired Cummins mechanics that live around the corner from me so I ask a lot of questions.

Re:Gauge readings for stock truck
My 93 ran about 13-14 psi in stock condition. Most of these trucks/injection pumps have their own personality... as most of the guys can attest to....
As you go down in housing size you will see roughly 2-3psi more boost per step down, assuming the same pump/injectors etc...
Right now the 16cm housing is pretty well the best all around size for throttle response, boost, low lag etc...it will also flow nearly identical air at the upper end as an 18cm housing with less lag time and better overall boost numbers...
They run about $150.00 USD with gaksets needed, at PDR...

If it makes you feel any better...my last WOT dyno run resulted in a temp of 1800*F at 53psi

Hey Bob, at 53 psi through that lil turbo aren't you ionizing the intake air and injecting pure plasma?
