Gas tank rigging

Gas tank rigging
Hey gang, got a quick question. I'm taking my breadtruck to the scrapyard, and they specifically requested to not have a gas tank in it. I plan on driving it there, and ripping the motor/trans out on site. I want to take a 5 gallon bucket, fill it with diesel and strap it down next to me to fuel the truck to get me out there. I'm more concerned with the "fuel tank" being higher than the lift pump? Will it still pull fuel just fine?

A gravity fed fuel tank is more of a problem than one where the lift pump (or transfer pump) has to LIFT the fuel.
Once the pump is primed the fuel will flow by itself although not with any pressure into the engine.
The problems I see are only with safety, if there were any leaking components the tank could theoretically siphon itself until it ran out of fuel.
Not so much a problem with diesel but on a gasoline engine it would flood back out of the carburetor or any leak and onto the ground.
Many older Gensets were this way.
BUT for your application you should be safe,
Make sure the 5-gallon bucket is secure, has a lid on it and the feed and return hoses are both in place.
You always need to think of the What If.
What if I got in an accident on the way to the wrecking yard and diesel fuel spilled out as I am trapped inside? No anti-rollover valve in place.
Seat belts?
Please be careful.
