Gas mileage in '91 W250. Shocking (to me anyway)!

Gas mileage in '91 W250. Shocking (to me anyway)!

Saturday I towed a dolly from Raleigh, NC to Cape Charles, VA to dolly back my 240 wagon. About 60 miles into the return trip, I filled up ($1.49 per gallon) and checked the gas mileage - 18.8!

Without towing anything, the truck gets 19.5 on the highway, just like the previous owner said. It's amazing.

A buddy at work has a '94 CTD 2wd auto and a Power stroke 4x4, ext cab auto and comapring them he notes important differences.

He said towing his horse trailer with the Dodge results in very little change in mileage, as little as 1 or 2, but the Ford it can very as much as 4mpg.

I figure that the difference is the inline 6 vs the V8, with the 6 getting more power lower than the V8 does. I mean the CTD is on the power anyway whenever it takes off from a stop.

Seems logical - am I right? Just a theory from a new owner!

That would be the most logical thing I could come up with. I had the women drive a powerjoke a while back so she could see the difference. She has since drove a couple different ones and she don't like them. She says it feels like you have to floor it to go anywhere.

Hi Heath,

"Powerjoke" - I like it. Sounds like "Powerpoke" might be a good one!

So even she could tell the difference? It must really be noticeable, then?

Denis, 2 yrs ago I averaged over 19mpg towing my Fury out to the Nats and back. Our caravan was only going 65-70mph, but still, I was pretty impressed. I had turned the pump up, but still had the 21cm^2 housing at that time.
