G360 to NV4500 or Rebuilt G360?
Hey folks,
So, I've done pretty well at work lately, and it looks like the wife has allotted me a portion of my earnings to swap out my transmission.
The options on the table are:
NV4500, with all the fixins, from a reputable shop (includes crossmember, AA parts, fluid, 205 adapters, everything...plug and play) for $2500 to my door.
G360 for $1200 plus $200 shipping plus $200 return shipping, so $1600 for the round trip.
Part of me really likes the idea of going to the smoother shifting transmission, and part of me is a bit fed up with the Getrag, and part of me has heard stories of the builder dyno-testing the tranny and everything, only to have a noisy transmission once installed.
At any rate, I know this has been beaten around the proverbial bush a few times, but wanted to throw it out there and get a discussion going for the one who means the most to me: me.

I made the switch with an NADP (Edmonton) built NV4500 four years ago and have never looked back. Good choice IMHO. Just fill it with GL5 and forget it. It's smooth and quiet and trouble free. What more could you want?

Get a G360 from this guy Jrjeepparts on ebay
he will have a 4x4 trans built when i send my core in next week
I talked to him on the phone for hours and hours and he is SOO knowledgable, he puts his personal cell number in all his ads so you can call him anytime. If you leave a message he'll briefly get back to you.
I got my transmission from him and i can't wait to get it, all his trannies get a new input shaft and every bolt/nut/washer is brand new. it even comes full of oil.
It's $1100 + $150 shipping- That's a pretty good deal! $1250 all said and done
I don't know where you got that G360 price you got, but hopefully it's not that allstate gear place in texas. my buddy had to battle with them about his NV4500 when it blew 3 months later. apparently they don't update to the newer mainshaft like you have to do to make the NV4500 live

That is actually the guy I was thinking of, on eBay. Indiana, I think?
I guess I was a little high on shipping, but you do have to pay for the core return, too, right?

Here is the guy on EBAY that I bought mine from:
No ebay links!
I happen to have a friend of mine going that way and he dropped off my core and when my friend came back through...he picked it up, so I didnt have to pay for shipping.
I have had no problems with mine and have 30k on it currently. I have another spare in the garage that needs rebuilt and I wouldnt hesitate to have them do it as I havent had any problems.
I dont have any advice for the swap to the 4500, as I have never had one.

I was about to move along and not stick my in, but decided to anyway.
I am exposed to several of both, G360s and NV4500s.
My rebuilt G360 has so far outlasted most of the guys NEW NV4500s around here.
If you drive/shift like you should, the G360 is fairly bulletproof; the NV4500 not so much from my observations.
NOW, were I up against the decision to order up a completely different "conversion" transmission, it for certain would not be any of the NVs, neither the 4500 or the 5600.
I would be looking into an Eaton/Fuller mid-range truck transmission, either a 6-, 7-, or better yet 9-speed.
If one shops around, any of those can be done for about the same money as the NV4500 swap.

The NV4500 is virtually bullitproof. The G360, not so much. I have been in the guts of both, and the NV4500 is somewhat beefier in all areas. And I hated the 2nd-3rd gear spacing on the rag.
Personal experience, I easily blew up a G360 with nearly stock power, and my NV4500 has outlasted 3 rear diffs and full boost speed shifting.

There is a thread I read a few weeks back around here. I will see if I can find it. A trans builder in here said both trans are very strong and last when driven right. He also stated that the only reason Dodge switched to the NV was lower cost. Because of the shifter position difference isint there floor sheet metal cutting required as well to install an NV4500?

I've had both and honestly dislike the gear spacing in both for hauling any decent load. I'm on the prowl for a crew cab 1st gen and since I'll be making some better $$ over the winter, this is the way I plan to go....prepare to drool
