further questions about VE pump adjustment

I saw another member asking questions about adjusting the bosch VE injection pump and wanted to get some additional clarification. Here's what I've done to mine; full power screw in approximately 1 full turn, afc pin on the deep side, star wheel 1/8 turn from bottom of bore, aneroid +2 1/4 turns. Now with the other mods included I am getting 20 MPG and pull about 800 F on hills floored in 5th gear.

I've seen guys talk about "cranking" the full power screw, does it stop at some point while turning it in? Or does the engine surge at idle or possibly runaway? What about full delivery requirements with 60 horse injectors and a new fuel pin (bully dog or old smokey)? I've also seen three different injectors for this engine bosch 185,190 and lucas POD's, is there a "marine" injector for this engine? We used to put marine injectors in 6.5 GM diesels and my god what a smokeshow from the pipe and the tires.

To clarify the EGT thats 800 F 2" from turbo outlet, was about 600 F all virgin with 21 cm housing with 4" straight pipe.

When I bought my 93 it was cranked up further than it shoud have been I was told. Boy was it fun,It eventually led to the pump self destructing. As I hear on the full power screw if you go to far it will run away. Also the idle will go up even with 1 turn possibly so it will need to be set back to 800 rpm with the air and lights on. It seems Ive read 1.5 turns was about as far as most dare.

You will know that you've got the main fuel screw turned up too far when the engine does not want to drop right back down to idle.

If you didn't clean up the threads after you removed the collar from the fuel screw, you probably won't be able to get it to thread in far enough for a runaway.

POD's will take care of your low EGT problem. They behave like the marine injectors you described.

With a cranked up pump and big injectors it's not a bad idea to add a set of high flow banjo bolts and a higher volume lift pump (Cummins piston pump or a FASS pump).

Yes, I did have to back down the idle approximately 200 RPM. We set it at 900 RPM like the newer 12V. Oil pressure is consistant regardless of temperature and the cruise surges less. I can pull 26-28 psi and have what I call the COAL ON COMMAND system, looks like special effects in an old james bond movie. A quick tap of the fuel pedal at idle is a smokey coal ball. I start to smoke white at 70 F for 6-8 seconds at morning startup, no grids at that temp. It really hammers at idle compared to stock. I think I am near the reasonable limits for the pump! I wonder if anyone is getting more than 28 psi out of the the HC1. Thinking about POD injectors, but live in Nebraska. Weird weather here 100+ F summer, possible -30 F winters with wind chill at -60 F on occasion.

I took it to the local county fair and pulled in "stock diesel" a few weeks back and it fried the clutch at 96 feet just as it hit 15 psi. I came out in the same effective gear as my buddys 98 12V with a 100 HP plate that pulls 38 psi. Thats 3rd gear 4LO from a dead stop pulling the sled. A buddy of mine wants to sponsor a fuel pin and PODS. Maybe 1/4 turn in on power screw, not smoking much WOT 90 MPH. I plan on a south bend clutch, feramic is probably necessary. Getrag blanket too! Thinking about building cold air induction based on the old smokey BHAF.

There is a guy out here with a truck like mine 800 HP, 85 PSI, stack through the hood, smokes like a pro stock diesel farm tractor at a whopping 4600 RPM.

How do old smokeys and bully dogs fuel pins compare? Anyone know?
