Fuel Tank Capacity
Hi all:
I ran my tank down until the Low Fuel light came on and the gauge was on the first tick above E but when I filled up it still only took 22 gallons. It's supposed to be a 30 gallon tank!
What's up with this?
Edwin

theres a generous reserve since its kind of a pain to reprime the system when you run out.
my light goes on and off at about 7-8gal and stays solid around 5-6gal.

remember though that there's no baffles in the tank, so if you go up or down a big hill the fuel pickup runs a risk of not being submerged anymore if the fuel's down too low, with that long tank it's easy to do. done it lol.

My truck had one installed by the previous owner. It holds about 35 gallons and is mounted above the spare tire. It is under the bed totally hidden. I think the spare tire mount was lowered a little bit. The filler neck is mounted behind the left wheel well, similiar to a Ford dual tank. It uses a Pollak transfer switch kit that I have seen at Northern Tools. There is switch mounted on the dash and the original gauge is used to show the quantity of whichever tank is selected. Just like a Ford set-up. It uses the engine pump through the selector valve, no extra pump needed. It gives me over a 1000 mile range.

id like another stock plastic tank to go on the opposing side of driveline, dunno how well it would fit around the diff but i doubt it would be that difficult to make it fit. of course for that to work you need to reroute the exhaust. your only other real options are sacrifice space in the box or the spare tire.

I've been thinking about using a tank from a Ramcharger and mount it behind the axle where the spare is. The spare would have to go. Anyone see a problem with using a gas tank? Obviously I'd flush and clean it first.

With a pass side saddle tank, a rear mount tank where the spare should be, that would be one heck of a range. And even a bed mounted transfer tank that could dump extra fuel into the saddles. Hmmmm New York to LA and back wouldn't be a problem lol. Of course 400 bucks a fill-up, OUCH! lol.

Edwin, don't forget the fuel cools the pump. When you get low enuff for the light to come on with heated fuel and you park over night, you might have a problem getting to the pumps the next morning after it has cooled off. It will probably take more fuel than whats left, to drive far enuff to heat up to where you were before.

Well, if I still have at least 5 gallons left when the low fuel light comes on, I should be well able to drive the 30 miles to Copan where the cheap fuel is. I was just going by the guage which showed less than that. I guess my light is more accurate than my guage.
The idea about putting another tank where the spare is sounds good. A lot of car tanks would probably fit there very well. Plenty of room in the bed for the spare. (It's a PITA to get it from out under anyway.)

I put a 36gal Ramcharger tank in mine. If you go to a Bone yard to get one make sure you have them (or you) cut out the upper tank mounts as well. There is an 18gal aft. tank available as well but if your going to do it, go big.
Also the concern of cooling the pump, in this case that does not apply. the pump is engine mounted (not in the tank)
