I am pretty sure that there should be like a little ball bearing that the spring pushes down on. Ive never had to take one out so I don't know for sure, thats what I remember from other posts.

You really need a tach, but it should idle at about 850 with the AC on.

Ok never mind about the ball, just the spring and a plunger. Have you done a search on this. if not do a search for "shut down solenoid" read through the many discussions on this and you will find some good pictures and info.

yep that looks like the plug, i'm pretty sure that the only tach that can use that is the isopro tach. I was lucky enough to have a factory dodge tach. Also if you want to mount it on the steering column, they make a mount that replaces the top plastic part on top of the column for a 2nd gen, I have heard that it will fit on our first gen. holds a 2 1/16 gauge.

it shouldn't, if anything when you turn the A/C on the idle will go down because there is more load on the engine.

look at an autometer 2888 I believe, you have to put the sensor on the alternator, so you don't use the crank sensor, its probably cheaper thats what a lot of guys do.

I bought a tach like this only 4000 rpm model

http://whttp://www.surpluscenter.com...atname=engines

Hooking a wire to the alt for output is easy, don't remember if directions were on here or TDR. Installed mine over the weekend and it works well, although I just adjusted it by setting the rpm to 800 idle, 3000 WFO in park.

Thanks I will check them out.

I got to thinking, If the starting problem was only partly the solenoid then what else is it. Could it be the pump timing? Idle? I have to give it gas to start it does what does that mean?

Sounds to me like the idle speed is too low, and pedalling it opens it up enough to start. The idle speed screw is the one behind the diaphragm housing next to the head. It's a PITA to get to. Some have had good luck by tapping the nut loose w/screwdriver and hammer, then using a small wrench to turn screw. The by-the-book method uses a 10mm wrench that is bent at a 90 to loosen the nut. Depending on the pump timing, I have used a deep 1/4 drive socket and a flex drive to loosen the nut, and an old carb adjuster screwdriver (flex shaft) to adjust the idle speed.

Thanks, I just picked up a book on it. I haven't looked at it yet, dont know if it will be help full or not.

Do you think I should try and addjust the fuel pressure or the idle frist?
