Apwatson50 is right on target. gut the solenoid and see if it starts. To get the solenoid out of mine I cut the mounting bracket off. the part that cummins left sticking up in the way so you couldnt get to anything. just take a grinder or hacksaw, or anything else that will work and cut that piece of bracket off that sticks up right behind the solenoid, then you can use a regular wrench to remove it. Believe me, it will save you lot's of time.

I didn't see it mentioned so if I missed it I apologize but....if you gut the start/stop solenoid and it starts up ok..repeatedly, since it's an intermittent thing right...then you'll need to use the shutdown lever on the side of the pump to shut the engine off....
It's that fairly heavily spring loaded lever on the side of the pump...when in the run position the bottom of the lever is toward the front of the engine...you need to move it back towards the firewall to shut off the fuel.

The bracket you're looking for is about 3/32" thick. It is attached to the end of the injection pump were the lines connect. It sticks upward and is usually a kind of brass color.
There are a couple 'O three holes in it and just simply seems to sit there with no purpose in life. It's the top part that gets in the way of putting a wrench on the fuel solenoid.
You can just cut it off slightyl above the pump head so you don't grind/dig into the pump head body.

it has been awhile ago since i changed a solenoid. but i took the bracket off holding the solenoid and it came off a lot easier. but first when the truck will not start look to see if the exaust is smoking. if no smoke no fuel. then check the solenoid.

thanks, I have checked but I forget if there is smoke(it is kinda hard to check with only one perosn) I belive that there was smoke but not totaly sure. The deal know with the solenoid guts in is that it will start but only if i have my foot on the gass a little.

So you took the spring and ball out? Now it will start with your foot on the gas a little? How is your idle, it sounds like your idle is low.

It dosen't sound low to me, but this is my first cummins. How do i tell if it is correct or incorrect.
