okay, just for the record, this mallory regulator seems to accomplish the job just fine! "big-whitey" has been back on the road for a couple weeks now, with no real issues. here is how the plumbing ended up after getting the pump all back together, and reinstalled back on the engine:
here is the little mounting bracket i whipped up to mount the regulator:
(obviously this location would not work on an auto-tranny equipped truck) and here it is done, and running:
so now, i have a question: does anybody know of a way to smooth out the reading on the mechanical gauge? i obviously installed it directly in the pressure port on the regulator, so thats not helping. but, its pretty much "not readable". so, i am pretty much guessing at the setting on the regulator, err'ing on the low side for safety. is there any kind of accumulator? or trick? (i did some quick searching (5mins) but came up dry).
and another indirectly related question: what are some signs that your injectors are worn out? i can go deeper into the reasoning for that question. but i was just wondering if there are any telltale signs of worn/bad injectors. before i divulge more info. i did change some settings a little while i had the pump out/apart, and was/am not sure what to expect.

I have the same regulator and I'm finishing up my motor this weekend me thinks. I like where you put the regulator infact... I might just have to do something similar. Thanks for the idea. I didn't really like or have the room to put the regulator in the fender area.
Also, I took a closer look at my front seal today. It doesn't look quite like the one you got that blew out.
The rubber portion of the seal is tucked under the lip of the metal much more, if that makes sense.
Also, to smoothe out the gauge use a needle valve from your local hardware store.
Thought I have no proof to say it's a fact, I think it's pretty common for you to get a bluish haze when your pop pressures are low. At least, it's a developing theory I have that has no real fact basis. Although it's the only reason I can come up with for why my truck hazed blue but wasn't burning oil.
I swapped my injectors almost 2 1/2 years ago. I just swapped the tips in them and had them reset a few weeks ago. turns out they were popping off over 1000psi low. That's a lot low... truck still ran perfect and even got me 20mpg in the summer on the stock auto trans before I took them out so who knows...

thanks for the info on the "blue haze" Rick! mine does sometimes seem to have a blue tint to it. and i believe my injectors to be original equipment with 248,000 miles on them now. i guess its time! (or well past) i will look into the needle valve. but as far as the regulator goes, its still there, doing its job just fine. havnt had to touch it since.

I threw my stack away! and never looked back. I don't want to know how much I spent on my truck, let alone how much I have put into the motor (which is now going in my nice comfy superduty) since the summer.

Good info in this thread. I am going to do this mod too. I got the Cummins HPPLP (Made in China) and am waiting on the regulator. I need to figure out what kinds/sizes of fittings and tees are needed.
The performance on my truck really falls off past 30-35 psi. From what I have read, I think I am losing timing advance due to case pressure falling off because the lift pump is falling behind.
