This is a good point, and one I've pondered also. I've wondered how the aftermarket guys harden their pins. Or maybe I should say where in the process of creating pins are they hardened? Because even utilising induction hardening is only going to harden a surface to a 0.035", (or something...) depth. Which is fine for a needle riding the profile, but if you grind away a bunch of material, (stock pin grind for instance) you're going to have a pin ending up like the Bully Dog one.
Or are the stock pins made of a 'harder' material so the whole thing is hardened?

dang you guys, I've already spent too much on my truck

NOW YOU WANT ME TO UPGRADE MY FUEL PIN

upgrading a 1st gen is like smoking ganga, you develop a habit which gets progressively worse

for only $105 the DennyT is too tempting

BUT how much does it cost you in mpgs????

grind your own, the afc lever only has so much travel in the pump top, deeper cuts dont fuel more, for maximum fuel and afc control grind a little off the afc lever. the advantage the aftermarket pin (cone) has is you can get a profile that bring fuel on later. this results in less turbo lag , lighting the turbo quiker makes more power with the ve pump becuose you can take advantage of its low and midrange fuel. a properly ground stocker w/ some afc grinding will fuel more than just a afterrmarket pin. nothing wrong with just buying a "pin" if you want. chance of a fuel leak if pump has original o-ring still.

Yeah, I'd like to hang around the ol first gen guys more. Haven't had a lot of time though. It doesn't help that I'm a trader and bought a common-rail either. I'd like to get another first gen.

Anyone have a side-by-side comparison pic of a heavily ground stock pin next to a DennyT or M&H?

Judging from JBradley's picture, I don't see any way you could grind a stock pin as deep as a "performance" pin is cut. The question is, how far does the afc lever push the pin out? Is it maxed out on a ground stock pin?
