fuel milage better with auto or manual?

I for a 2wd '89 I had to gather the pedal rack from a donor, clutch slave and master cyl, cut teh floor out and add the larger drivetrain tunnle, in this case a bolt in tunnle from a m880 worked fine. Shorted the front drive shaft about 2" (should've cut 3" off) and purchased a rebuilt/turned/roller bearing input shaft bearing flywheel from quad 4x4, bought a brnad new sachs stock clutch and pressure plate off ebay, bought all grade 8 hardware and bought the getrag and bewllhousing, rebuilt the getrag with new input shaft and bolted it all together! 50,000 miles later and 24-25 mpg and I've almost recouped my cost of 1500 dollars for the swap in fuel savings and saved my ears a lot too!

that dosent seam to much to difficult to do if you have everything before you do the swap, i know a guy selling a getrag with brand new clutch and bellhousing all i need is the pedal assembly and master cyliner and clutch slave, how much was it to get the front drive shaft shortend?, is the needle bearing input shaft a must? or what it has will work? does the clutch pedal need alot of fabbing to be put in place? how should all that be to do?

The driveshaft shortening was done at driveline specialists here in sacramento, however they're all over the place - a certified Dana Driveline place, it cost me 35 dollars to get shortened, and rebalanced. The pedal rack if you take it from another dodge with manual 72-93 should bolt right in place where the auto pedal was, the brake mech will bolt right up. The clutch pedal fits right in, don't forget the clutch pedal mount bracket assy as well. Everything bolts right in! It was an amazing deal actually how modular the trucks are. I didn't ever even remove my auto collar shift lever. I like to confuse onlookers...
The Brass bushing input shaft won't last. You need to get your Flywheel machined out for the BALL bearing, the needle bearing in the 2nd gens is just as bad...

I just checked my milage on the auto without any weight and only on the interstate. Keeping my rpms up so I can drive at 75mph or so, I was getting between 14.5mpg and 15.5mpg without AC.
I since fixed the AC and clocked it again. This time, I kept my speed at 65mph (to keep engine temps down) and the AC was on. Mpg went up to 17mpg and I was jumping with joy!! Keep in mind, this is interstate miles without a load.
3 speed auto without OD.

My W350 gets 17 mpg mixed driving. That included running up I-95 between D.C. and Nofolk, VA. the very best I have seen is 18.7 mpg and that was trying very hard to run up the mileage running only on Interstate empty. Not the way I normally drive. My normal curb weight is 7000 pounds and I like the feel of a good launch.

the swap is definitely doable, and I did everything myself 'cept for the driveline shortening. I'm younger and inexperienced and I'm not a master mechanic by any means but I know the basics. I'm a certified A&P mechanic but I'm not working in the field ATM. I either got lucky or it was easy. Mysteryman, Locomotive1 and Tkingbury from pirate 4x4 and Tdr helped me out huge.

i drove my truck to the flemingsburg meet with 3.55 rearend, torqflite with georend convertor.
it was on the governor most of the trip at 72 mph i recorded 15.9 mpg
remember that is floor board mileage.

For MPG comparison, my mom's truck got 21-23mpg hwy when I owned it 7 years / 150K ago. Towing a 10K trailer up and down I25, I go t 13-16, depending on how fast I went. This was all stock, save the K&N filter.
