Fuel line as the pickup in fuel tank

What do you guys think about using 1/2" ID fuel line as the pickup in the fuel tank as apposed to a piece of copper or brass tube for the pickup?? Would the fuel line be broken down in short time?

I've seen what steel pickup tubes look like after a while and they don't look pretty. That was with a gasser though im not sure how the diesel will be with it. I think you would have much better luck with the brass or copper though for sure. Or you could always go stainless at least you wouldn't need to worry about it anymore

i think that the rubber fuel line would get soft and colaps. and the the fuel slapping back and forth would help to push on the sides of the hose.

It can't be to hard to put a 1/2" tube in,bend as sodder on place.....would it?

or am i just not getting what you are trying to do?

i drilled-out the tank's top plug and brazed over-size steel lines into a gasoline tank for a friend and as far as i know he never had any trouble with the steel. that was for a holley pro-jection setup which requires 3/8" minimum supply and 5/16" return as i recall. or vice versa.

i don't see why steel would be a problem. rust? don't let it sit nearly empty for long periods of time....

What is that, rubber hose or ?

I'm trying to build a 1/2" fuel system, but I feel like an idiot when it comes to fuel lines, fittings, pick up, bulkhead fittings, the plumbing of everything etc. I know how it all goes together in theory, but this is very new to me, I haven't done it before. I'm good at some things, but this will be a first. Sure I could drop my truck off at a shop and tell em what I want, but I want to learn and don't want to spend the big $$ on labor.

Im sure you will be able to do it yourself Bill. Im going to be putting in a 1/2' pickup as well very shortly. Just make sure you take off your bed to do it. It makes it ton easier to get access and work at everything and its easy to get off there only about 6 bolts, un plug the tailights and then take the 3 screw off the filler neck in the fuel door area. I guess the hard part is moving the bed.
Good luck and be sure to let us know how it goes

The Ford tanks are notorious for the factory pickup breaking off and not permitting the last third, or so, of fuel to be used.

Many of the Ford guys have made pickups out of plain old rubber fuel line with no problems.

A few guys added an inline filter to the bottom of their hose; guess what happened when the filter finally stopped up.
