Question Fuel Leaking from seperator

I have a problem... When I am stopped or parked at an Idle, fuel begins dripping from the water seperator ( I think) on the drivers side of the block. There is a little plastic piece at the bottom of what looks like a filter, that the owners manual says is the water seperator drain. Does this mean it needs service? Is this a common problem? I am realy a neophyte at desiel engines............

Get a new filter, and change it out. it will come with the required gaskets. Make sure both come off with the old filter. There will be a flat one around the threaded hole on top.

First unplug the wires from the plastic piece on the bottom. Unscrew the old filter. Take the plastic piece off the bottom and inspect it for cracks. Put the new gasket on and screw it into the new filter. Fill the new filter with clean diesel or I use fuel additive for ease. Put the new gasket over the threaded hole and screw the filter on just a little more than hand tight. While your there, make sure none of the lines appear wet. It may stumble, but as long as you fill the filter, it should start right up, if not the first, then the second time.

Yeah, I didn't look as close, I changed my post. Do the filter change to make sure all thge gaskets are ok. If the valve/plastic piece is cracked, check Cummins before the dealer.

Geno's has them for around 20$ If you can't find one. Mine gets stuck sometimes after draining the water from it. It is very sensitive. You might try to just pull on the drain part to see if it quits. Really a poor design if you ask me, but they are pretty cheap. I think it is called a Water in Fuel sensor, but is also a drain.

Another source of leakage has been known to be where the 2 wires for the WIF sensor go into the plastic piece.

Well, to make it better, the two wires to the sensor there are broken off. Part of why I am also looking for the wiring schematics. It seems like that would be a fairly important sensor to have working...It is running from the bottom of the plastic drain part, it is realy obvious. i am probably loosing about a gallon of fuel an hour at the rate it leaks. Thanks for all the help guys.

I had a similar post on fuel filters not that mine leaked I think mine was a little dirty/old and that it has been on the truck before I picked it up and I`ve had it for almost 2 years. To make a long story short You can get a Case fuel separator Pn#J843760 it has a screw style drain so that will take care of the plastic drain brakage issue the down side is that there is no WIF sensor, like yours mine is MIA so I drain mine more just too be safe.

If you get the new drain plug form Cummins or Mopar then I think that it has the wires pre-installed into the drain so that would make it a screw into the filter base with new o-ring and plug in deal, the filter that I used (Case J843760 they were free to a good home so I saved some money) there is no way to use the WIF sensor but I live in a very dry area (HELL Tucson AZ) so to be on the safe side I drain mine more than most people so even if the sensor is wired up and working I would still drain on a regular basess.

How often is it recommended you drain this? just when the sensor indicates its needed or every few hundred miles? what is the "bright line" rule of thumb on this

The manual says "every time you fuel the truck." I've never seen water come out of mine, I drain it when I remember which works out to every couple of months. Never seen the WIF light other than during the key-on bulb check.
