Fuel Injection pump leaking on top, anyone else with this problem? Gasket?

My fuel injection pump is leaking massively from what looks to be the top part of the injector pump, thats held down by allen head bolts (4) I took it apart yesterday and seen theres a rubber gasket thats in there. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if that cured the problem, or is there something else causing the leak. The bolts were pretty snug, so i dont think it was a matter of tightening the bolts> Maybe the gasket is just old. Or maybe theres something else thats leaking past, thats not suppose to, and its being squeezed out the top portion. I just want to take apart this thing once, and cure the problem before I put it back together. Thanks for any, and all help. This is on a 89 dodge 1 ton cummins

I've never heard of one leaking from that gasket. Are you sure it's not leaking from the throttle shaft? That is very common.

Could be the AFC housing? Maybe the o-ring for the pin is leaking.

im not real familiar with "what is what" on the VE pumps but there is some sort of fuel supply or return line on the front of the pump on the top. its a metal hardline roughly 3/8" diameter. give that a shot.

if its leaking massively, start the motor and check to see where its coming from. have someone rev it up for you to help aid in finding the leak.

just throwing out ideas as i am still learning these pumps.

Take the cover off the AFC. If it's full of fuel in there, then the fuel pin o-ring is leaking. Take the eccentric (cone) out, open the throttle for the fuel pin to pop out. See if there is some corrosion you can clean off, that may help it to reseal when it's clean. If theat doesn't help, it'll need a new seal.

Post Injection Pump Leak

These pumps in the heavy eauipment field, have a tendency to leak from the throttle shaft/fuel shaft that your pedal linkage connects to, on top the pump. The springs are notoriase for wearing as well. So, we have pulled the top cover off and replaced the shaft, bushing, and o-ring, as well as the spring and cover gasket.

Want further info. I can try and help with specifics.

When it was running, it seemed to be leaking all around where the top portion of pump attaches with the allen bolts. Of course it was leaking down and was alittle tough to find where the leak was starting from. I think its also leaking from where all the fuel lines attach on the backside of the pump. I pulled the top off already, and the shaft popped out after tugging on it....I was actually trying to just disconnect the spring, when the shaft popped out, and the top released from the pump. Seems easy enough to put back together. Although im stringing this along , that ill probably forget how to put it back together Thanks for the continued help

If it's leaking from/at the back it is most often the center "plug". There is a nut there that is removable so you can set the pump timing using "plunger lift" method. It is located in the very center of were the fuel lines all connect to the pump head and is bugger to get at but you can do it if you are really determined...
Sometimes the thing loosens off and leaks. It's not to common to have the injection lines start leaking for no reason, especially more than 1......
The pump top leak can be, as noted the throttle shaft bushing. They are brass and eventually won't seal any more....the other area that you may be having trouble with is the kinky/curvy rubber gasket that seals the pump top to the body...if you put in a gov. spring you "may" have pinched it, or didn't get the entire thing in it's groove....

Next is the banjo bolt at the rear of the pump. It is a large bolt that has two 'crush washers' on it. They can leak on occasion. It is located above the start/stop solenoid and is not hard to find.....don't look at the one with the little rubber boot and breather tube on it..that's not it.

Check those out....spray the pump really well with brake clean and blow it dry...pull the wires off the start solenoid and crank the engine for 20 seconds....look for new signs of leakage....remember, the starter can heat up fairly quickly so let it rest for a good minute or so after each cranking....no more than about 3 should show the lead if it's bad enough for leak with supply pressure only. If it doesn't leak then reconnect the wires on the solenoid and start it up....look again while it's running and use a light and a mirror to see if it's leaking on the back (engine) side too...

pb....putting in a good word at the church for you on this one bud...
