You have a fuel heater?

My old truck didn't have a fuel heater; I think that yours would be an aftermarket unit. In which case I wouldn't sweat about removing it.

There is a different "filter adapter" that will thread into the head and let you put the filter on without the heater. I do not have the cummins part number for it, however. If you found a helpful cummins shop, they should be able to supply you with one.

Here ya go:

Fuel filter stud for use without fuel heater Cummins 3925954. Pricey, just checked this weekend, something like $17. If that's too rich for your blood, you can replace the o-ring/seal that is between the fuel heater and block for less than a couple bucks. Fuel heater square o-ring Mopar 4429695 or Cummins 3913695.

So the fuel heater is just a unit that attaches to the top of the filter?

Do all trucks have those?

All Dodge diesel trucks have a fuel heater somewhere. On the '89-'93 trucks it's between the filter and the head. Later models have them in different locations.

I bought a "tested" one online at $8.29 from:
http://www.reliablegoods.com/cgi-bin/sqlstore/index.cgi
This one installs with an allen wrench instead of having the straight screwdriver slot.

Nothing wrong with used pieces like this as long as they clean up good. I tell ya if I ever come across a non-fuel heater setup 5.9 B series in the junkyard, I'm gonna grab this adaptor off it.

Yes. The o-ring is there to keep trash from migrating into the filter and to prevent fuel from escaping past the threads. You should get a new o-ring each time you purchase a new fuel filter... unless you bought FS1221. It doesn't come with one.

I guess if it's not leaking, then you'll be ok. I just saved the old o-ring from the FS1232 old filter and reused it when switching to the FS1221. That o-ring, from what I discovered, is not available from Cummins separate.
