Fuel Gauge Sending Unit ?

My fuel gauge only starts working when the tank is about half full ( or half empty depending on how you look at it ). Any more fuel than that, it reads empty or near empty.. Once I get down around 1/2 tank the gauge starts working correctly again.

Sounds like a fuel sending unit ?

If so, is this a dealer part ? I havent been able to find any online ( rockauto, etc)
