Fuel Gauge and Low Fuel Light
Where to start?
I've been fortunate, most everything on my truck (only 102k) works as it should,
EXCEPT the fuel gauge. It used to just give random readings, was always kind of fun to play guess how much is left.
Now the fuel gauge reads empty all the time, I just figured that the sending unit is bad, watch milage and do "tank math."
But today, the low fuel light came on, and I'm thinking - doesn't the low fuel light work off the tank sending unit? It would be nice to have a functioning fuel gauge as well.
edit: the low fuel light is accurate, the tank will take 24 gallons, so low fuel is showing 6 gal left refilling. the light goes off
Can it be that there are two sending units or is there another sensor for the low fuel light. Or could it be as simple as a bad fuel guage?
Anybody have a thought as to where to start to track this down?
Thanks,
Bob

According to the FSM, the sender has an internal switch for the low-fuel light. Page AD-81.
One lead comes out to the gauge, another to the message center, plus a ground lead.
They both go thru a blue connector left side under instrument panel, but it would be hard to tell you the pins - I'd have to email you the page from the FSM.

Mine did the exact same thing. With one exception. it read full, when full. then dropped off over the course of 70- 120 miles. However about a month 1/2 before the accident i figured out the LF light was getting inaccurate, from 23 gallon fillups to 26 gallon fillups when the light JUST came on. Thank goodness i knew my truck well enough to do mileage. And the never ending supply of fuel round these parts.
