Smile Front Crank Seal Groove

Hi All,

I am replacing my VE pump with a new one, doing the KDP, Putting a new front seal in, doing the radiator, and cleaning the intercooler. As you might have guessed, I have the whole front of the truck off,( the easy way to getto everything). Anyway, I have a fairly deep groove in the front of the crank where the seal rides. Can the seal be seated a little farther in or am I out of luck? The seal was leaking somewhat, but not really bad. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much ,
Mike

I have not heard of a reason why it would not be okay.

Thanks Brian,
I hope more will chime in, but I am going to try it tomorrow. I will be putting it back together tomorrow afternoon and hope for the best. I don't want to have to put in a new crank.

Thanks again for this forum,

Mike

There is a seal kit from Cummins (and probably after market like PAI) that has a wear sleeve (speedi sleeve) that goes over the crank and a seal with the correct ID to accommodate the sleeve. These are quite common with MD and HD diesels for both the front and rear main seals. I did a rear main w/sleeve on a C9 CAT today and started on a accessory drive seal and front crank seal on a Cummins M11, used wear sleeve seal kits on both.

Do you have an auto or 5spd? Any slop to the crank at all? Might try prying against the balancer and checking.

Hi,
I have a 5spd. I don't have slop in the system. I checked that last night.

Thanks,
Mike

I've used the sleeve on gassers and they work well.

FWIW, the sleeve/seal combo is double the price of a seal only. I would try placing the seal in a different spot, since you already have the seal. Can the groove be caught with a finger nail?

Hi,
Yes, the groove is fairly deep. The groove is where the vrey front portion of the seal rides. Behind that is smooth. I have an extra front cover and I might try seal placement a little farther back. I also now have the wear sleeve and seal coming. I'll see how this all comes together. I really appreciate all of the responses.

Thanks,
Mike

Good man, better to do it right the first time. I hear you can install the wear sleeve/seal combo the same way you do the seal only- with a straight edge/2x4 and hammer. The book says you need a special install tool, which is super high dollar.

The engine sitting in my garage has a little bit of a groove in the front, I was gonna get the sleeve, but was told I needed the high dollar install tool, so I just placed the seal in on a different spot of the crank. Now I hear Greg installed one the old fashion way.

Howdy,
Yeah, I think I'll just install it the old fashioned way. I'm sure it can't be too hard. I've installed worse with less, Ha.

PAI is just an aftermarket label for parts. Most truck dealers will carry PAI branded stuff. Also FP diesel, a Federal Mogul, is another source. CarCityMachine on Ebay sells PAI branded stuff. I've bought quite a few items from them for everything 6B's to VT-903 Cummins.

Yes, the 98 12V should take the same seal. If you buy the kit it comes with an installation tool, if you just buy the wear sleeve/seal it doesn't come with the installation tool. If you just go to the local bearing house and buy a "Speedi-Sleeve" it also comes with an installation tool.

aicomp,

I had some pretty deep grooves in mine too. I didn't use a speedy sleeve, but I'm quite sure one of these days I'll wished I woulda. The front groove is/was HORRIBLY deep, the inboard one, definitely not as bad as the front one, but it's the one that worries me because that's where I think she'll spring a leak one day!

Good luck!
