Re:Fluttering?

My intention has always been to stretch my torque curve into as low an rpm range as possible. With that in mind, advancing the timing did not seem like something that I wanted to do.

I am assuming that you are getting less surge because you aren'nt making as much boost at those low rpms -- is that right? Also if I recall, advancing the timing was suposed to hurt the low end power, but I need to investigate that further -- for me it is all about how much fuel I can dump in there at low speeds without generating excessive smoke and EGT's.

My plan has been to put on a turbo with MWE -- just haven't quite gotten to it yet.

Please let us know as much as you can about the results of the tweak, maybe I need to change my tack.

Thanks,

Alec

Re:Fluttering?

Alec-
Maybe my SOTP meter is dead, but the truck doesn't seem to have lost any bottom end power. The truck feels "snappier" overall to me, and it wouldn't feel that way if I lost bottom end. I think with the dinky turbine housing we've got bottom end power to burn. It doesn't make sense to me that advancing the timing in and of itself would hurt low end power. It may have that effect on trucks with larger turbine housings because the cooler EGT's translate into less boost, which means the AFC isn't supplying as much fuel as it did before. And if it hurts low RPM power, why does the truck idle faster? I don't think the effective boost pressure at low RPM on mine has decreased, though, because now it's steady boost instead of fluctuating all over the map. If you want to dump the fuel in as early as possible, I think you will have to advance the timing to keep the EGT under control.

Re:Fluttering?

I need to do some more research on timing, no doubt. I upped the timing a LOT on my 6.2L in the Jeep, and I know it made a world of difference all around. I think your theory about the low end perf reduction being due simply to lower EGT's dropping off the boost is right.

Let me know as you keep driving it!

Re:Fluttering?

Just curious if the compressor housing from an HX35 would be a direct fit on an H1C with the stock compressor wheel.

Re:Fluttering?

No. The hx 35 uses a snap ring instead of band clamp to hold it together, the back of the inducer has a cut-out to clear part of the back-plate on the 35, and the H1's on the 3/4 ton trucks have a smaller inducer anyway.

You can buy a new larger inducer and scroll with MWE, though.

Re:Fluttering?

Why not pick up a used HX35? I've picked them up for under $200 shipped.

Re:Fluttering?

Believe me, I'm workin' on it. I keep gettin' outbid by ricers Once I get one, the silencer ring is going to fall out before it hits the truck. ;D

No I don't sorry, I bought the first one then found the second one that was in better condition for less. Sold the first one already. I'm keeping the one I have as a backup.
