Fleetgard And Oil ???

Is Fleetgard #3349 correct oil-filter for my engine??

#3552/MICROGLASS is same application; is it worth the extra bucks??

I can't find Fleetgard # for fuel filter; does anyone know??

Now some oil questions.

On the shelf at Advance, all for $7.97/Gal., are three brands of 15W-40 diesel oil.

Rotella, Castrol, and Blue Valvoline.

I have used Rotella for years in various gas and diesel engines.

Of the three, is there a best; or, is motor oil motor oil??

Seems like I read somewhere that the Blue Valvoline performed miracles for someone.

I know that Kendall blue gun-grease is the best I have ever used; maybe the blue has something to do with it.

What oils do you guys use and why??

FS1232 is the fuel filter you want. The oil filter you have is fine, but I like and use FL3894. 3894 is the second gen 24v stratapore.

Unlike a PowerStroke, Cummins engines are pretty easy on oil. Any of the above plus Delvac and Delo will do fine in your engine. The Castrol Techtion is too new to know where it stands (GTX Diesel is old stock), but to rate 1-4 I would go Delo, Valvoline, Delvac and Rotella. That said, after 200K of using one brand vs. another you probably won't notice any difference.

An old mechanic friend once told me, "it's not the brand of oil you use that's important...hell, it's only in there for 3 to 4 thousand miles. All that really matters is that you change it". Nuff said....

Fleetgaurd 3349 is the oil filter you want. As for oil, I run Shell Rotella 15w40 with 0 problems. Well there is one problem, its that dang external lubrication system that seems to get me .

Ok if you didn't get that, external lubrication system=oil leak

Yes. Also you can use any oil filter designed for a Dodge Cummins pickup, 89-06 models on your 1st gen.

If they're all the same price I'd use the Valvoline - because that's what Cummins uses.

If Cummins uses it because they honestly know it's best, that's a good recommendation. The trouble is most marketing today is done as a result of some kind of financial agreement, not on the basis of what might be the best product. I am sure there are limits to this, I doubt they would recommend Fram filters no matter how much they were paid.

I'm not going to drive a Buick just because I like golf and Tiger Woods, nor am I going to drink Bud because I like Jr.. Neither am I going to use such and such a razor because it is the offical razor of the NFL.

Before I used Valvoline on the basis of Cummins using it, I would want to know why they do so in specific terms.

Like I said - if they are all the same price. I use Delvac myself because the Valvoline is more expensive and the Rotella is stinky.

Every diesel rated oil (including "house" brands like Wolf's Head, Super Tech, Truckella ) on the market is way better than the oil that was originally specified for our engines. Oil selection is not something to get worked up over. If it's diesel rated and the second number is 40, it'll do the job if you change it at reasonable intervals. Reasonable intervals - there's an argument waiting to happen.
