Smile To fix or buy 5.9 cummins

O...Need some opinions as to what to do..I have a 93 Dodge with the 5.9Cummins, the injector pump went out...metal bits out the fuel line bowl etc..the question is Is it worth to replace the injector pump or better buying another one for around 4-6 grand with less miles...

Mine has over 320 thou and body is rough but it hauls my 12000 pound Fifth wheel and gets 23-25 by itself on the freeway when empty so love that mileage...body is rough but has been a tremendous truck other then the injector pump going out...Thinking of changing it myself...is it Really hard or so-so? I did the killer dowel pin by myself and change all the fluids as well but I am no mechanic for sure.

It drives like a tank but I love my truck..had to buy a 94 ford with the 460 gas and the MPG is killing me pulling my trailer it gets about 6-7, the cummins gets 13-14 pulling the same thing!

Along the same line anyone have experience with the different companies that sell the injector pumps...one in florida is the cheapest but has GOT HORRIBLE reviews...most I've seen are around $1200 with the larger fuel pin and 3200 RPM spring (will the fuel/spring combo decrease MPG?)

Any help or comments are greatly appreciated

this is the truck pulling my little trailer..gets 17-18 MPG WHEN it's running :-(... :-)

I would keep and fix what you have now. It's been good to you and reliable. Even if you buy another one with less miles, it's more than like full if it's own problems. Also I wish my truck's body was as good as yours. My rockers are almost completely gone all the way to the cab corners now.

I would find another pump. New or used... or a parts truck to swap a pump from. Even if its a 2ndgen.

The way these trucks work and last, just fix it and keep on truckin.

I Believe The Hungry Diesel Sells Reman injection pumps. Not sure on the price but I don't think I would cheap out on the pump.

I agree with the others you have worked out most of the bugs in your truck so going with a new truck will just open another can of worms. Replacing the IP is not too bad a job, will probably take you a couple days....I will recommend removing the vacuum/ps unit when doing the IP.....makes it so much easier to re/re.

After reading the posts about replacing the IP on this site I was able to replace mine in around 4 hours. I had never even worked on a diesel before this, but I was a pretty experienced gasser mechanic, so I had the basic mechanical abilities. This was in 2005, 3 or 4 years before I joined this site. I figured out on my own that the removal of the PS pump and vacuum pump assembly would make the job much easier. What I battled with the most was knowing if the woodruff key had fallen out during assembly or not, it was a leap of faith. Since then I know that you can just rotate the key to the top without messing anything up. Soooo, if one has some mechanical ability, one can do it...Mark

When you do the injection pump make sure you pull the lines, blow them out real good, also pull your injectors and get them cleaned and pop tested ( if the truck has 320 thousand it's time) because if any metal shavings get in there it will hold them open and pump compression back into your pump.

Don't ask me how I know this
Mark, I never thought about rotating the key to the top, wouldn't that make the job too easy...lol
