Finaly decided on a turbo, ATS 4000......

After a ton of research and looking at options I decided on the ATS Aurora 4000. With a titanium wheel and small waiste gated exhaust it spools almost as fast as stock, but at 63mm/70mm it will move enough air for 600+whp and live at over 60psi.

It was a hard choice, but I need quick spool up AND top end flow if I'm going to get this getrag into the 12's. I should be ordering it next week along with the new pump and studs.

Arvada, Colo.--ATS Diesel’s Aurora 4000 Turbocharger has been a popular choice for many truck owners for both competition and street driving due to its midrange size and air output abilities. ATS has updated this turbo and it is now available with a titanium compressor wheel and wastegated housing to allow for boost output approaching 70 psi., at a flow rate of 1190 cubic-feet-per-minute, company officials said.

In order for the exhausted air from the engine to efficiently spin the wheels inside the turbo and create spool pressure, the wheels must be both lightweight and strong. While aluminum material accomplishes this, the Aurora 4000 has now been given a titanium wheel to provide maximum strength under-fire.

High heat and incredible rotational force is exerted on the compressor and the new titanium metal option means that the Aurora will outperform its aluminum competition. After thousands of heat cycles the wheel will sustain its shape and avoid deflection and fatigue of the veins, the company said.

Tighter A/R geometry inside the turbo means that spool-up happens more quickly compared to a larger housing, but can also cause drive pressure to be outside of the desired range.

By adding a wastegate to the Aurora 4000, the top-end excess air is allowed to bleed-off, and the turbo maintains optimal drive pressure for peak performance. The turbo’s owner can adjust the onboard wastegate to provide the perfect balance of power and security.

The engineering and proprietary components of the Aurora 4000 allow it to support power levels of 600 rear-wheel horsepower, while holding one of the industries only warranties (3-year 150,000

The 600 whp claim is probably for modern injection systems. I'd say -200 whp for a VE truck.

How much is it going to set you back?

Have you looked into an E.D. 62/68?

Yes but I dont think it will support 450+hp fuel only, and also survive nitrous past 550hp. The 4000 has a 14cm w/g exhaust that should spool well but also bleed off the extra pressure once the nitrous goes in.

With the new 63 wheel out now from Borg Warner, I would not consider running a 62 or a 64 on the compressor side if the turbine side was a 68 or 71.

I think you have the right turbo for what your doing.

The only other possibility would be a 63/73/14.

I've ran an Aurora 5000 as single and am running the 3000 now as a single til I put them on together. Personally I think they are great turbos. The 5000 was a pretty big single but for as big as it was it spooled pretty quick and boy did it flow some air. I couldn't hit 1100 degrees if i tried, I had to watch the boost gauge to keep it under 40 more than i did my egt gauge. The 3000 is nicer for daily driving, its a hair quieter and spools quicker but yet it still flows plenty of air for my needs. I've only seen 1200 with it so far but I haven't really opened it up lately. So the 4000 being in between the 2 of them I think it will be a heck of a turbo for a single. Should flow plenty of air for what you need and still have good spoolup. I think you'll be pretty satisfied. You should have no problem spooling it quick especially with a 4200 rpm governor spring. I'm not sure if I woulda paid what ATS wanted for these turbos, but since I got them for a good deal used, then I really like them. Their warranty is hard to beat though. Enjoy

The only other turbo that sparked my interest as much as the ATS 4000 was the HTT 62/65/13SS. I believe it would also do pretty well getting spooled off the line, but overall I liked the ATS and the warranty. Plus the 4000 leaves me a little room to grow in HP past 550whp. There are some guys pushing the new w/g versions like I'm getting past 700whp with nitrous.

One day, after I get an auto trans, I would love to try out the 3000/5000 compounds. Even on a manual tow rig they would be awesome!

Yeah I say if you do have some heat issues with that turbo after a 14mm pump, then I say just add some water meth or nitrous. I really think you'll like it though.

Yeah I'm waitin for a few more things til i put these compounds on, but I'm gettin pretty excited to see what they'll do.

Shipping might be a little pricey cuz this 5000 weighs at least 45 lbs! its not too fun trying to install it hanging over the side of the truck. The big one is collecting dust right now but it looks good sitting on the shelf, one of these days when I get the itch and can have my truck down a few days I might just put them on together. Thats how I got them is the guy i bought them from went to a s300/s400 setup on his 24 valve and he said these were just sittin there doing him no good.

62/65/14 would be way too small.

The 13cm stainless housing spools like a 12cm or faster, but has double the w/g flow, allowing you to spool fast and hold the set boost without crazy drive pressures. So yes its small, but the extra size of the w/g allows it to make and handle more power. I'm sure it will make 550whp fuel only on some trucks, but will it also flow enough for a good shot of nitrous. Thats where the Aurora 4000 won me over.
