I've heard if your truck and trailer are over 18k, the fan manufacturers do not recommend the electric fans. If you're in the mountains, I'd definitely stay away from them as they cannot pull the CFM of the stock fan.

I would try a new clutch on your old fan. Over time they cool less and slip more. I have 2 89's and the diffrence in fan "noise" is alot. I have one that just doesn't engage much any more and that one runs warmer.

I would be tempted to try an electric. That fan on there spins all the time so there is always some drag. And the electric would not run all the time just when needed. So in winter it would be great. However hot summer days and a trailer and traffic is what would have me worried. I would bet you could see some fuel savings.

I am woking on a 97 fan clutch upgrade which is supposed to be a heavier duty one that orginally came on the 1st gens. I am also planning on a fan upgrade from a dodge 3/4 ton van with HD cooling. I have the mopar p/n at home. Its has nine (9) blades that are very pitched.

I can post some pictures later.

Are you in fact having problems with the stock/OEM engine cooling system? Is this a stock truck? Bombed? Heavy towing sho'nuf work-truck? Weekend warrior?

I don't know that the true OEM fan's CFM rating has ever been published but I've seen references to 6000 CFM. Take that for what it's worth.

The typical dual cooling fan systems I've seen are usually good for about 4000CFM (There's plenty of fine print in those numbers I'm sure).

Right-off, you're coming up short.

Then add in the common efficiency losses typical of the fan motors, associated wiring and alternator. (Both the OEM direct drive fan and the electrics would share a common belt-drive loss).

Then consider the OEM alternator's only good for so much. Toss in a heavy hitting Boom-Box, additional driving lights, etc . . . . . .

Then you get to fix the blame thing!!

On the other hand you can turn the mess off when fording a small river or giving a quarter mile all she's good for.

Or you can spend an additional $400 or so for the direct belt drive model with an electric clutch.
