Factory tranny temp sensor, necessary?
I just finished installing my Autometer tranny temp sensor in my truck.
I was looking at the lines deciding where to cut and splice in a T when I saw the factory temp sender on the hot hard line going out to the cooler. It happens to be the same fitting size that came with my Tranny temp guage so I pulled the factory sender and installed my Autometer guage.
My assumption is that if I watch my guage like I always do, to be sure that I don't go over a certain temp, that I should be ok. If I understand correctly, you shouldn't operate your tranny as hot or close to as hot as the system makes the tranny kick out of overdrive.
First, Are my assumptions correct?
Second, What is a reasonable max temp for my factory tranny in my 92 W250?
Thanks,
Chass

The factory temp sensor ties into the PCM and kicks the OD out automatically at around 280. I left mine where it was and tee'd into the line and adapted the gauge accordingly. In My experience the one time I would need to look at the gauge I would be distracted.

Your assumptions are correct. That sensor is not needed as long as you're sure not to overheat the tranny in OD.
What's considered overheating? I'm definitely no tranny expert, but I would say 240* or higher is cooking it pretty good.
